About the Role
Japan's largest daily newspaper, with a circulation of over 5 million copies and more than 25 international bureaus, is hiring a Reporter/Research Assistant for its Washington, DC bureau. The paper is headquartered in Tokyo and operates three U.S. bureaus in Washington, New York, and Los Angeles.
This is a support role assisting Japanese correspondents with their coverage of U.S. politics, foreign policy, economics, and government. Day-to-day work includes attending press conferences and briefings (in person, by phone, and by video), tracking relevant news stories, arranging and conducting interviews, composing clear and concise memos on issues of interest, and covering events. With 2026 being a midterm election year, campaign rallies and related events will be an integral part of the work. Rapid and precise transcription is also required. This position does not include byline or article-writing opportunities.
Coverage areas may span the White House, State Department, Department of Defense, Treasury, Commerce, USTR, Federal Reserve, Congress, area think tanks, and the campaign trail. Occasional weekends and overtime once or twice per week should be expected, with the possibility of more overtime depending on breaking international developments. Some domestic travel is available.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Background in U.S. politics, international relations, economics, foreign policy, or journalism preferred
- Attention to accuracy and ability to multitask under deadline
- Ability to develop and maintain good sources
- Strong work ethic with the ability to take direction and collaborate well
- Japanese language skills preferred but not required
- Must reside in the Washington, DC metropolitan area or have immediate plans to relocate
- Must be available for in-person interviews in downtown DC
