About the Role

The organization administers educational exchange and lifelong learning programs, serves as a lifeline for imperiled students, scholars, and artists, and is a recognized leader in international education.
The director leads a team of communications professionals and advances the organization's impact by building engagement internally and externally. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the role spans digital content management, strategic campaigns, brand stewardship, creative and graphics, press and media management, executive messaging, crisis communications, and staff engagement. This is a leadership position responsible for annual planning, cross-organizational collaboration, and promoting the highest professional standards across all communications.
What the Role Covers
- Managing a team of communications professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability
- Supporting the development of organizational communications strategy across business development, philanthropy, research, higher education initiatives, and program teams
- Leading the annual planning process with objectives, timelines, performance metrics, and a monthly calendar of campaigns across social media, web, video, and print
- Providing communications support and crafting executive messaging for the CEO and senior leadership, including digital content, talking points, and written materials
- Supporting crisis communications strategy, messaging, and execution during sensitive or high-stakes situations
- Project managing major communications initiatives including significant program and organizational milestones
- Overseeing visual content and brand integrity, managing designers and vendors on major campaigns
- Developing publicity plans to elevate humanitarian initiatives including scholar rescue and scholarship programs
- Overseeing the organization's website for public education, programmatic information, and reputation management
- Providing communications training to staff for conferences, social media, newsletters, and blogs
- Developing and executing an annual staff engagement plan including events, information sessions, and discussions with leadership
- Overseeing departmental operations including technology solutions and budgets
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and at least 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination
- 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, journalism, or public relations, preferably in higher education, international education, or nonprofit organizations
- 5 years of managerial experience preferred
- Expertise in digital communications ecosystems and integrated, multichannel strategies
- Experience producing and overseeing multimedia content including video, web, social, email, and publications
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills across formats from long-form thought leadership to platform-optimized social media
- Proficiency in translating complex data into clear, audience-focused messaging with data visualization
- Strong command of communications analytics tools (Google Analytics, social media insights, CRM platforms)
- Demonstrated experience with crisis and institutional messaging during periods of ambiguity
- Project management capabilities for complex, cross-functional initiatives
