Accounting Manager (General Ledger – GovCon)

📍 Location: Reston, VA (Hybrid – 1–2 days onsite, remote flexibility)

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager (GL) to lead general ledger operations, own the month-end close process, and drive financial reporting accuracy within a government contracting environment.

This is a player/coach role — ideal for someone who wants to lead a team while remaining deeply involved in day-to-day accounting operations, process improvements, and audit readiness.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Close Ownership

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Own general ledger and ensure accuracy of all financial transactions
  • Review and post journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting deliverables
  • Maintain balance sheet integrity and resolve discrepancies

Reporting & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, FAR, CAS, and other government contracting regulations
  • Support internal and external audits, including DCAA and financial statement audits
  • Assist with preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts
  • Oversee cost pools, indirect rates, and allocations

Leadership & Team Management

  • Manage and mentor a team of GL-focused accountants
  • Provide coaching, performance management, and development support
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment

Process Improvement & Systems

  • Identify opportunities to improve close efficiency and reporting accuracy
  • Drive automation and process optimization initiatives
  • Support ERP system enhancements and accounting process improvements

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with AP, AR, Payroll, and Project Controls teams
  • Work closely with leadership on financial reporting and operational insights
  • Communicate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within government contracting
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and government contracting regulations (FAR, CAS, DCAA)
  • Experience owning month-end close and general ledger operations
  • Experience with cost accounting, indirect rates, and allocations
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Advanced Excel proficiency

Preferred

  • CPA or CMA
  • Experience with ERP systems (Oracle Fusion, Lawson, or similar)
  • Experience with internal controls and audit processes
