Horticulturist - Operations

Our client seeks a skilled and dedicated Horticulturist to oversee and manage greenhouse operations in **Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, IN**. This role requires a deep understanding of plant physiology, cultivation techniques, and greenhouse environmental control systems. You will be responsible for maintaining optimal growing conditions, ensuring plant health, propagating various species, and managing greenhouse staff. The position involves hands-on work with a wide range of plant varieties, from ornamentals to research specimens.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage day-to-day operations of the greenhouse facility, ensuring a clean and organized environment. Develop and implement horticultural practices for the cultivation and propagation of diverse plant species. Monitor and control environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light, and irrigation to ensure optimal plant growth. Implement pest and disease management strategies, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques. Oversee the selection, planting, and maintenance of plant collections. Manage irrigation systems and ensure efficient water use. Supervise and train greenhouse assistants and volunteers. Conduct regular plant health assessments and take corrective actions as needed. Maintain detailed records of planting schedules, growth progress, and operational expenses. Source and procure seeds, plant materials, soil, and other necessary supplies. Stay current with horticultural research and advancements in greenhouse technology.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in horticulture, with a focus on greenhouse management. Strong knowledge of plant physiology, propagation techniques, and plant identification. Experience with environmental control systems (HVAC, irrigation, lighting) in greenhouses. Familiarity with pest and disease identification and management. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent observational skills and attention to detail. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Physical fitness and ability to perform tasks requiring manual labor. Experience in record-keeping and basic inventory management.
