New York, NY or Washington, D.C. | Full-Time | $70,000-$90,000/yr

About the Role

An award-winning, independently owned online political news organization is hiring an Associate Editor to help shape its journalism and get it in front of the right audiences. Founded during the 2000 Florida recount, the outlet is known for driving national political coverage and has won major awards, including a George Polk Award. It operates on a membership-based business model and has maintained financial stability and growth through a period of upheaval in the news industry.

The associate editor will work across the full lifecycle of a story, from the moment a reporter begins working on it through distribution across newsletters, social video, traditional social platforms, and beyond. A central part of the role is ensuring the organization's audience, and especially its members, understands the significance of the storylines being covered. This is both an editorial and an audience-strategy position for someone who can shape stories and ensure they find readers, listeners, and viewers.

What the Role Covers

  • Shaping stories and ensuring they reach audiences across multiple channels
  • Developing and executing ideas for distributing journalism in new and creative ways based on the publication's needs and audience
  • Working across newsletters, social video, and traditional social media platforms
  • Editing stories quickly and concisely, and writing when needed
  • Serving as a sounding board for reporters as they work through thorny issues that arise in investigative journalism
  • Ensuring members and the broader audience are aware of the organization's work and understand the significance of ongoing coverage
  • Helping maintain the connection between the newsroom's output and the membership community that supports it

Qualifications

  • Newsroom editing experience with a firm grasp on American history and the political forces of the last 25 years
  • Multiple years of experience developing creative strategies to distribute journalism based on a publication's needs and audience
  • Demonstrated comfort and experience across written word, audio, video, and social media distribution (essential)
  • Precise thinker with impeccable attention to detail and the ability to edit and write quickly
  • Knowledgeable about American law and government
  • Prior experience reporting or editing stories related to voting, election administration, political extremism, or democratic institutions is a plus
  • Experience parsing and editing news based on legal documents is a plus
