As a member of NB Power’s Legal department, the Solicitor is responsible to provide legal advice on a wide variety of commercial, contractual, employment, construction, procurement, First Nations, and/or litigation matters to all levels and divisions of the Corporation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, negotiation and drafting contracts to further business objectives, providing recommendations and interpretations relative to changes within the Corporation and legislation, the preparation of contractual documentation, drafting of pleadings, legislative interpretation, legal research, dispute resolution, and providing legal opinions. As such, our ideal teammate must have a thorough understanding of, and previous experience in one or more of the following areas: corporate/ commercial law, litigation, labour and employment law, regulatory law, construction law, Aboriginal law, and procurement law.
Reporting to the Director of Legal, Facilities & Energy Management, the Solicitor will regularly interact with other members of the Legal department and be assigned legal files working with all levels and divisions of NB Power.
Key functions include:
- Provide timely and business-minded legal advice
- Make recommendations and interpretations relative to applicable legislation and/ or regulations
- Review and/or prepare all relevant legal documentation as assigned
Our ideal teammate will have the following:
- Bachelor of Law Degree
- Membership in good standing or to be eligible for membership in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick
- At least four years of experience practicing law since being called to the Bar
- Three years of experience focused on at least one of the above noted areas of law
- A proven track record of working well in a team environment
The following would be considered assets:
- Bachelor of Engineering Degree
- Previous experience with large scale construction or engineering projects
Should the candidate have more than eight years of experience practicing law since being called to the Bar, they may be eligible for the classification of a Senior Solicitor.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.
An Eligibility List generated from this competition may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level within a period of up to 12 months.
