Your Opportunity:
The APL Clinical Trials and Research (CT&R) Department is a provincial department that is rapidly growing and networks with many other laboratory departments and disciplines in healthcare. Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA’s) report to the tech II’s for operational questions and problems with escalation to the clinical supervisor or manager as necessary. The CT&R department provides support to existing and emerging studies that impact patient care and outcomes. A strong background in multitasking, organization, communication, and customer service is required to work in this small but diverse department. Skills and accuracy in sample processing, packaging and logistics are essential to ensure study protocol requirements are met. Experience in Anatomical Pathology (AP) is an asset as many studies require management of AP material. Eligible candidates will have to complete a tour of the department prior to an interview. Interview questions may reference information given on the tour. The successful candidate will have to work at CCI and UAH. Each location offers different opportunities for growth, independence, and responsibilities.
Description
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications (1300 Character Limit)
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications (1500 Character Limit)
A strong understanding and experience working with lab functions in Epic such as requisition entry is essential. Basic understanding of Anatomical Pathology (AP) data entry and workflow is an asset. Clear communication is vital to the department (verbal and written), as a lot of communication with our stakeholders[SK2.1] occurs through the MLAs. This is a small team that requires independence and teamwork; the successful candidate will be responsible for working in both types of environments to meet tight deadlines with differing priorities. The successful candidate must be self-motivated to recognize opportunities to complete non-time sensitive duties with deadlines. Experience with excel spreadsheets is mandatory; understanding formulas, multiple tabs and recognizing errors is essential.
Preferred Qualifications (500 Character Limit)
Two to three years MLA experience in two or more operational areas. Centrifuging, aliquoting and sample triaging including packaging and transportation to other sites is essential. Previous CT&R is an asset. Experience navigating portals/apps is an asset (i.e. FedEx, UPS). Air TDG certification is an asset.
