Organizational Overview
PrepMatters, Inc. is a premier source in the Washington metro area for one-on-one test preparation and academic tutoring. Our tutoring staff helps students and families navigate the whole alphabet of standardized tests, ranging from the SSAT/ISEE/HSPT for middle-schoolers to the SAT/ACT/AP for high schoolers to the GRE/GMAT/LSAT for college students. We take pride in our deep understanding not only of the tests but also of how to effectively communicate with and bring out the best in our students.
Position Summary
PrepMatters is looking for bright, dynamic people to join our paid tutor training class, leading to work as a professional SAT/ACT and academic tutor in our Bethesda, Tenleytown, or McLean offices. Weekly training sessions will be required of new hires. All of our colleagues enjoy beautifully furnished offices with fully stocked kitchens. Our full-time operations team supports our tutors administratively so that our tutors can focus on the work that matters most: helping students!
Primary Responsibilities
One-on-one tutoring - Deliver the highest quality academic tutoring and standardized test preparation
- Maintain content expertise spanning the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests.
- Master recent publicly available tests as well as PrepMatters proprietary workbooks and other pedagogical tools
- Regularly sit for official SAT and ACT administrations
- Demonstrate proficiency with PrepMatters instructional methods
- Craft personalized education plans for each student
- Tailor delivery of proprietary PrepMatters materials to the needs of the student
- Build upon each student’s strengths while working to shore up academic weaknesses
- Recognize and work to remediate the effects of stress and anxiety tied to the standardized testing process
- Quickly establish a healthy rapport with students
- Strive to build students’ self confidence in all interactions
Client communication - Serve as the primary point of contact between PrepMatters and the families with which it works, providing expert guidance on all aspects of the standardized testing experience
- Initial meetings
- Perform meet and greets with clients when required
- Correctly set client expectations and goals
- Craft a testing strategy for the academic year that best matches the calendar of test dates with the needs of the student.
- Provide updates after each session in the form of Learnspeed notes to parents and students
- Respond to parent or student inquires no later than 24 hours after receipt
- Maintain professional standards of communication in form of address and language
- Address client needs clearly and thoroughly
- Proactively schedule ad hoc conferences with parents and students as needed
Operational support - Observe operational protocols vital to the success of the operations staff in providing a high-level professional experience to our clients
- Calendar
- Maintain an accurate calendar of student meeting times
- Clearly mark times open for tutoring and those that are not
- Session Notes
- Accurately record all fields in Learnspeed after each session, including at a minimum a Student Note.
- File session notes within 24hr of the session
- Weekly news
- Stay current with and abide by policy changes published in the weekly PM News
- Staff meetings
- Attend quarterly staff meetings as required
- Attend new tutor roundtables during first year of employment
Requirements
Education, Certifications and Years of Experience
- Bachelor’s degree – complete and not in progress
- At least two years of test preparation experience covering all sections of the SAT or ACT
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Academic expertise (up to the AP level) in either sciences, calculus, history or a foreign language
- A true appreciation for working with kids
- Willingness to make at least 10 hrs/week available during busy seasons, including weekend time
