L1 Underwriter – Roles, Responsibilities & Requirements

Position Summary
The L1 Underwriter is responsible for conducting initial underwriting reviews for new business and renewal groups. The role ensures accuracy of census data, validates assumptions, and prepares cases for senior underwriting approval. Collaboration with Quotation, Renewals, Implementation, Sales, and Operations teams is essential to support timely quote release and renewal processing.
Key Responsibilities
New Business Underwriting
- Review RFQ documents.
- Assess group health plan designs, benefits, and contribution structures.
- Perform initial risk assessment and identify data discrepancies.
- Prepare cases for underwriting review and approval.
Renewal Underwriting
- Review Medical Loss Ratio (MLR), claims experience, and utilization trends.
- Analyse membership changes, demographics, and plan modifications.
- Validate renewal recommendations before escalation to senior underwriters.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in any stream.
- 2–5 years in Health Insurance Underwriting, Employee Benefits, or Group Insurance Operations.
- Exposure to group medical, dental, vision, life, and ancillary products preferred.
Preferred Knowledge
- Group Health Insurance products.
- MLR Analysis.
- Rating methodologies: community-rated, age-banded, composite.
- Participation and contribution requirements.
- Proposal generation and renewal processes.
