Job Description

The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applicants for a Laboratory Technician to become a participating member of the Michael Ibrahim laboratories.

The incumbent will participate in research studying cardiac microstructure, T-tubule biology, and translational heart failure research and contribute to lab management.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Use experimental methods including handling mice, small tissue dissection, histology and immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cognitive performance, genotyping, and real-time PCR.
  • Work with students, post-docs, and other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments.
  • Perform lab management tasks including ordering and receiving, equipment service, and coordinate schedules for lab meetings and shared equipment.
  • Compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures; and consulting with the Principle Investigator regularly.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Associates Degree
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Preference for those with a degree in a related science field and prior lab experience
  • Self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working with laboratory animals.

This position will remain open until filled. This position WILL sponsor applicants already in the US for work visas. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

The anticipated Hiring Range is commensurate with education and experience.

The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other benchwork and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
