Job Summary
Under direct supervision, collects blood samples by performing venipunctures or finger or heel sticks on patients. Checks the quality of blood and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient, following established standards and practices.
Primary Responsibilities
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.
- Obtains venous and /or capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
- Utilizes positive patient ID system to identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, or storage.
- Processes specimen and where required; prepare and pack specimens for shipment to another laboratory
- Unloads pneumatic tube system, receives and delivers specimens
- May perform specimen registration in EPIC or Cerner
- Performs and complete order entry on outpatients.
- Answers the main phone lines of the department and answers question regarding status of orders; triages and transfers calls.
- Monitors pending specimen collection lists and resolves specimen issues as needed.
- Communicates effectively with laboratory, nursing and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, or storage.
- May sort laboratory reports/mail and distributes them to appropriate mailboxes.
- May perform inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients. Rotates stock to ensure outdating does not occur.
- May fill supply requests for client needs.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Work Experience
Education & Experience - Required
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- Experience: Entry level
Education & Experience - Preferred
- Education: Completion of an accredited program in Phlebotomy
- Education: Certification as a registered Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians
- Some experience either by completion of course clinicals or on-the-job
- Experience in a hospital or outpatient health care setting
