Job Description

About Us

The Local Charity is a volunteer-run Canadian registered non-profit charity based in Toronto devoted to creating diverse leaders of tomorrow. Our mission is to enable and inspire individuals to reach their greatest potential. Our goal is to empower them to be the author of their own story.

We are a lean operation run predominantly by volunteers with minimal overhead expenses.

Our sister brand is Success Accelerator, through which all our programs are delivered, supporting our main pillars of elevating and enhancing access to:

🧠 Mental Health

📚 Essential Life Skills

💻 Technology

The Opportunity

TLC is building its social media and digital marketing presence from the ground up — with a clear content strategy framework already in place and a new brand identity ready to launch. We need a Content Strategist & Copywriter to own the editorial engine: turning our content strategy into a living editorial calendar, writing the copy that moves people from awareness to action, and ensuring every piece of content serves our fundraising and engagement goals.

This is the most critical marketing role we're filling right now — and it carries a coordination responsibility. Beyond writing and strategy, you'll be the person keeping the marketing team's rhythm moving: briefing the Graphic Designer, aligning with the Community Manager on what's going live and what CTAs to reinforce, and making sure the team is working from a shared plan rather than in silos.

You won't just be writing captions — you'll be shaping how our organization tells its story to donors, supporters, and the youth we serve across both The Toronto Local Charity and Success Accelerator brands.

What You'll Inherit

You won't be starting from scratch. We have a defined content strategy framework with five content categories and a rotation approach, brand guidelines nearing completion, participant interview transcripts and program stories ready to be shaped into content, and an AI-assisted voice training tool for consistent messaging. What we need is someone who can take these building blocks and turn them into a consistent, strategic output.

What to Expect

We're a small, collaborative team where every contribution is visible and valued. You'll have real strategic ownership — not just filling a content calendar, but deciding what stories we tell and how we tell them.

This is a volunteer-run organization. We don't have a creative director or marketing manager overseeing every deliverable. We're looking for someone who can work independently, bring ideas to the table, communicate proactively, and adapt as priorities shift. You'll work closely with the Graphic Designer and collaborate with program team members who surface stories and content opportunities.

We'll work together during onboarding to define specific responsibilities that match your availability and strengths.

Qualifications

  • Believing in our cause is mandatory 😃
  • Experience in nonprofit communications, cause-based marketing, or donor-focused storytelling — not just "knowing social media"
  • Strong copywriting skills with the ability to craft CTAs that feel natural, not pushy — the difference between "DONATE NOW" and weaving the ask into a story about impact
  • Understanding of the donor journey and how content moves people from awareness to action
  • Experience building and managing editorial calendars
  • Ability to write in an authentic, warm voice that reflects organizational mission and values
  • Comfortable working asynchronously via Slack and Monday.com
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and what performs on each
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills for managing multiple content streams
  • Portfolio or writing samples showing cause-based, storytelling, or donor-focused content preferred
  • Familiarity with non-profit operations and youth programs is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Take our five established content categories — impact statistics, participant stories, testimonials, community activities, and donation/call-to-action posts — and build a cohesive editorial calendar with intentional rotation and pacing
  • Write compelling captions and copy for social media posts, email campaigns, and fundraising appeals that reflect TLC's authentic, warm voice without sounding clinical or performative
  • Own the full donor journey across social media and email — from a first-time follower seeing an impact stat to a donor who feels personally connected to our mission
  • Collaborate closely with our Graphic Designer to provide creative direction and ensure content and visuals work together
  • Support fundraising campaigns including our Voices of Resilience series, crafting narratives from participant interviews and program outcomes
  • Develop and maintain brand voice guidelines that the broader team can reference for consistent messaging
  • Write across multiple formats: social captions, email sequences, campaign copy, and website content
  • Adapt content for different platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok) based on what performs on each
  • Manage and maintain the content calendar, ensuring consistent posting cadence and strategic timing
  • Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment, fostering creativity and innovation
