Job Description

Instructor – Summit College

About Us

Summit College is a regulated Ontario Career College with six locations across Ontario. Our mission is simple yet powerful:

“Fuel lifelong success by empowering people with skills and awareness to reach higher personal potential.”

We take a holistic approach to learning, supported by a low student-to-teacher ratio. This allows us to offer personalized support, flexibility, and a learning environment in which students can truly thrive.

The Role

We are seeking an occasional instructor to join our supply roster. You will be called upon to provide coverage when instructors are on vacation or absent, when enrolment increases, or when there is a need for one-to-one student support.

Hours will vary from 0–30 hours per week—you may work no days, a single day, several days, or more consistent part-time or full-time hours, depending on operational needs. Our schools operate from 8:00 am–3:00 pm, with shifts typically ranging from 3–6.5 hours. We generally provide several days to a few weeks’ notice.

For the month of May, we’re looking for someone available to teach 15 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9am–12pm).

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Instructor to facilitate, teach, and inspire students across a variety of programs, including:

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Academic upgrading (Math, English, ESL)
  • Career-focused diploma and certificate programs (e.g., Customer Service, Office Administration)

This is not a traditional front-of-class teaching role in a large school setting. Summit operates on a smaller scale, with office-size classrooms of 3 to 5 workstations.

For the right candidate, this offers independence, ownership, and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students. Learners work on different programs at individual stations while instructors circulate to check in, answer questions, provide feedback, and guide progress. Some students work independently, while others require more one-on-one support — allowing you to see real growth over time.

While programs include self-paced components, many learners require significant instructor support, redirection, and encouragement due to academic gaps, confidence challenges, or external pressures. Progress is often non-linear, and instructors balance multiple students with varying levels of independence.

For educators who value growth over speed, this work is challenging — and deeply rewarding.

This role is best suited for instructors who are comfortable supporting learners with foundational skill gaps, and maintaining patience when progress is slow or uneven.

Baseline competency in foundational math (approximately Grade 8 level) is required. Instructors who feel less confident in math are expected to be open to strengthening this skill to effectively support students.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting students one-on-one and helping them set achievable goals
  • Marking work and providing constructive feedback
  • Preparing and using Summit’s ready-made learning resources
  • Writing progress reports, completing assessments, and possibly collaborating with funding agents
  • Working within continuous student intakes, where enrollment and program length vary based on individual goals

Hours

8:30 am – 3:00 pm,

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has strong emotional intelligence and can build rapport with students navigating life transitions
  • Demonstrates patience, adaptability, and a genuine passion for learning
  • Enjoys working with diverse learners of varying ages, skill levels, and challenges

Requirements

  • Diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution (required)
  • Adult Education degree (preferred)
  • Strong ability to build rapport and motivate students
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Openness to ongoing learning and professional growth

Why Join Us?

At Summit, instructors are trusted as professionals and supported in doing meaningful work. With our low student-to-instructor ratio, you’ll see the impact of your guidance every day.

This role is ideal for educators looking to move away from traditional lecturing and toward a personalized, student-centered teaching model — where relationships matter, progress is visible, and your work makes a real difference.
