Electrical Field Engineer / Quality Assurance - Projects

  • Pay Rate: $59.26 to $74.07/hour, depending on experience
  • Contract Length: 1 year
  • Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Site-based role at Suncor’s Firebag location 8x6 day shift rotation.
  • Return flights to Firebag from Calgary or Edmonton hub and camp accommodation provided.

Raise is currently hiring an Electrical Field Engineer / Quality Assurance - Projects on behalf of our client. Our Client is a globally competitive integrated energy company that extracts, produces and provides energy from a mix of sources, ranging from oil sands to renewable fuels.

Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.

Description

The Electrical Field Engineer / Quality Assurance (QA) specialist in this role will support major capital projects within our clients In Situ Portfolio. In this dual-focus role, you will act as the vital bridge between design engineering, construction, and quality management. You will spend significant time in the field providing rapid, practical engineering solutions to complex electrical challenges, while enforcing rigorous quality surveillance to safeguard asset integrity and compliance. This role requires an Alberta-registered professional engineer who balances strong technical authority with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach on the ground.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Field Engineering & Construction Support
  • RFI & FCN Resolution: Provide timely responses to field inquiries, Requests for Information (RFIs), and Field Change Notices (FCNs). Perform field inspections for problem analysis, run engineering calculations where required, and collaborate with vendors, construction crews, and the Engineer of Record (EOR) to deliver practical solutions.
  • Work Package & Contract Scope Support: Assist the construction team in developing Installation Work Packages (IWPs), defining scopes, and compiling necessary technical data for field-issued contracts.
  • Engineering Review: Review engineering and construction work packages for errors or omissions, transferring key technical milestones and requirements into placeholders within the turnover management system.
  • Drawing Interpretation: Assist construction contractors with the technical interpretation of drawings, specifications, and data sheets. Review and approve vendor shop drawings and technical submittals.
  • Quality Assurance & Inspection Lifecycle
  • ITP & QA Review: Review contractor Quality Plans, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and related QA documentation in a timely manner.
  • Quality Surveillance & Witnessing: Perform progressive audits and field surveillance to verify contractor adherence to regulatory, industry, and -specific requirements. Witness critical electrical testing and installation activities as mandated by the project ITPs.
  • Deficiency & NCR Management: Initiate Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) when contractor deviations are identified. Conduct progressive inspections to catch deficiencies early, leading IWPs through construction to final system walkdowns to record punch lists.
  • System Turnovers: Drive the closure of field deficiencies by providing technical support and hands-on validation. Review and close out FCNs, Design Change Notices (DCNs), and NCRs.
  • Redlines & Care Transfer: Review redline documentation against actual physical installations and official project change records. Verify the final project turnover packages for absolute completeness to support seamless Mechanical Completion and the official Transfer of Care, Custody, and Control (TCCC) to operations.
  • Health, Safety & Environment
  • Safety Leadership: Actively participate and lead by example in ’s core safety programs. This includes completing high-quality Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), conducting Critical Control Assurances (CCAs), and actively engaging in contractor safety and alignment meetings.
  • Key Interfaces for Position
  • Coordinate daily with contractor field coordinators, foremen, superintendents, and third-party QA personnel to resolve construction roadblocks and align on inspections.
  • Partner closely with site management leadership to provide engineering backstop and solve constructability concerns safely.
  • Provide regular technical status updates to Project Management and collaborate directly with the external Engineer of Record to validate design changes.
  • Interface seamlessly with system commissioning leads and owner representatives during inspections to integrate end-user feedback into final completions.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineer, with a significant portion spent in the field supporting heavy industrial major capital projects (specifically oil & gas, oil sands, or In Situ operations).
  • Experience with Field Engineering & Design Issue Resolution (RFIs/FCNs) - Direct experience troubleshooting complex electrical installation challenges on-site and working collaboratively with vendors and engineering firms. Timely analysis, response, and formal closeout of Requests for Information (RFIs), Field Change Notices (FCNs), and Design Change Notices (DCNs).
  • Quality Assurance (QA) Lifecycle & Inspection Surveillance - Experience: Reviewing, approving, and executing contractor Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs). Hands-on experience witnessing critical electrical testing and field installation activities.
  • Construction Work Packages & Turnover Management - Practical knowledge of Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) frameworks, turnover workflows, and punch-list coordination (Execution of final system walkdowns, validation of accurate "as-built" redline documentation against physical installations, and compilation of flawless project turnover packages.)
  • Final Completions & Safety Leadership - Leading field safety initiatives, performing Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), and executing Critical Control Assurances (CCAs) in an operating facility or active construction environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), NFPA regulations, and relevant industrial electrical safety standards.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills. You must be comfortable working collaboratively with craft labor, corporate project managers, and executive stakeholders alike.
  • Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) and fully capable of authenticating professional work products.
