Summary

Under the direction of, The Training Coordinator, the Facility Trainer shall be multi-task oriented, an effective communicator, be able to prioritize training requirements, and have the demonstrated knowledge and skill in handling all animals’ species, specific to the Central Animal facility, they shall maintain a professional demeanor and be able to articulate and present trainings in a creative way to teach to the various learning styles of individuals.

Requirements

  • A.A. or B.S. degree in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology, or related discipline, preferred.
  • Must have prior experience in supervisory and/or training roles in a laboratory animal facility.
  • Literate in written and spoken English.
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level.
  • Proficient in lab animal techniques (bleeding, injections, restraining, etc.).
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Good interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Ability to cooperate with co-workers and function productively with others in accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to function in a customer-client atmosphere, i.e., assists the company in providing positive responses to customer needs and delivery of quality services to the customer.
  • Ability to follow through on instructions.

Duties

Work Assignments are based on work requirements to meet the contract needs, which may include the following duties:

  • Assure that procedures and practices involving the program of animal care are appropriate for the establishment and continued maintenance of AAALAC accreditation.
  • Adhere to security procedures and confidentiality requirements.
  • Assist, when requested, in experimental planning and logistics/scheduling of projects.
  • Responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, assessment, and oversight of a dynamic training program in a rapidly developing facility.
  • This person is expected to be forward thinking, creative, possess strong written as well as verbal communication and teaching skills.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for all areas of the animal facility. Ensure that staff assigned to each position in the facility is trained and proficient in completing responsibilities in accordance with university SOPs, policies and guidelines associated with their position.
  • Conduct weekly training sessions for animal care and support staff consisting of hands-on demonstrations and/or classroom lecture.
  • Work with Project management to identify and prioritize training needs.
  • Develop computerized technical training modules, slide presentations and videos,
  • Provide AALAS certification classes.
  • Annually review and directly observe each employee to assure that all employees maintain their technical competence.
  • Participate in the development, review, and updates to facility Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Regular inspection of facility to ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and university regulations.
  • Any other duties or task delegated by contract or university management.

Hours: Basic workweek of forty (40) hours per week with the start and the end of the workday dependent on the contract requirements of the workplace. Hours dictated by the institutional research schedule, weekend and holiday work maybe required. Must be reliable in attendance to ensure animals receive appropriate level of care. Potential for call-in to assist facility or animal health related emergencies.

Lifting/Moving Requirements:

Light work; lifting to 50 pounds occasionally; repetitive lifting/manipulation of up to 10 pounds, applying up to 10 pounds constantly to move/roll objects.

Environmental Conditions:

Customarily performs animal care, research management and administration duties in an environmentally controlled work area. However, technical and management duties may be performed in an animal care vivarium, barrier facility, surgical or test procedure laboratory, animal housing/bedding cleaning and processing areas. Work may require use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in these facilities. Laboratory environment and/or animal care work areas may be prone to hot and humid conditions, and subject to objectionable odors, aerosols, dust, animal dander, and noise.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $32.00 - $38.00 per hour
