Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Senior Database Administrator (DBA III) to manage and optimize our mission-critical database platforms. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and strong operational knowledge of modern distributed databases including MongoDB, Cassandra, ClickHouse, and Elasticsearch.

You will play a critical role in ensuring database reliability, performance, security, scalability, and operational excellence across Phenom's cloud-native infrastructure. This position requires strong troubleshooting skills, automation mindset, and experience supporting large-scale production environments.

What You'll Do

Aurora PostgreSQL Administration & Performance

• Own the administration, availability, performance, and scalability of Aurora PostgreSQL clusters.
• Perform advanced performance tuning using:
• Parameter Groups
• pg_stat_statements
• AWS Performance Insights
• Vacuum / Autovacuum optimization
• Query execution plan analysis and optimization
• Diagnose and resolve production performance bottlenecks.
• Establish and maintain database performance baselines and capacity plans.

High Availability, Disaster Recovery & Upgrades

• Support HA/DR operations for business-critical databases.
• Execute Aurora PostgreSQL version upgrades using Blue/Green deployment strategies.
• Monitor replication health and perform controlled switchovers with minimal downtime.
• Design, test, and maintain disaster recovery procedures and recovery runbooks.

Backup, Recovery & Data Protection

• Manage backup and recovery operations for large-scale Aurora environments (10TB+ clusters).
• Implement and validate:
• Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR)
• Backtrack
• Snapshot lifecycle management
• Recovery testing and validation
• Ensure recovery objectives (RTO/RPO) are consistently met.

Database Security & Governance

• Implement and maintain database security best practices.
• Design and enforce least-privilege access models.
• Manage:
• Application roles
• Migration roles
• Reporting roles
• DML-only application users
• Configure and maintain:
• IAM Database Authentication
• Reader/Writer endpoint segregation
• Audit logging and alerting
• Security compliance controls

Monitoring & Observability

• Build and maintain comprehensive monitoring solutions using:
• Grafana
• Prometheus
• PMM
• AWS CloudWatch
• Create proactive alerting and dashboards for database health, performance, replication, and capacity.
• Lead root cause analysis and post-incident reviews.

Automation & Infrastructure

• Partner with Platform and SRE teams to automate database operations.
• Support infrastructure-as-code initiatives using Terraform.
• Contribute to configuration management and operational automation through SaltStack and related tooling.
• Develop scripts and automation frameworks to improve operational efficiency.

Multi-Database Ecosystem Support

• Provide operational support and best practices for:
• MongoDB
• Cassandra
• ClickHouse
• Elasticsearch
• Participate in architecture reviews and database technology evaluations.

Nice to Have

• Experience migrating MongoDB workloads to PostgreSQL.
• Expertise in:
• AWS DMS
• Debezium
• Change Data Capture (CDC) architectures
• Experience designing relational schemas from document-based data models.
• Exposure to large-scale SaaS platforms and multi-tenant architectures.
• Experience supporting AI/ML or analytics-heavy workloads.

What We're Looking For

Required Skills

• 5+ years of database administration experience.
• Deep expertise in Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL.
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL internals and performance tuning.
• Experience managing production databases at multi-terabyte scale.
• Strong understanding of backup, recovery, replication, and high-availability architectures.
• Hands-on experience with database security, access controls, and compliance requirements.
• Experience with monitoring and observability platforms.
• Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience working in AWS cloud environments.

Preferred Skills

• MongoDB administration experience.
• Cassandra operational knowledge.
• ClickHouse performance tuning experience.
• Elasticsearch cluster management and optimization.
• Infrastructure automation using Terraform and SaltStack.
• SRE and DevOps-oriented operational mindset.
