Job Description
Loudoun Mutual Insurance Company is seeking an experienced and customer-oriented individual to fill a Specialty Claims Adjuster position for the state of Virginia. The Specialty Claims Adjuster will be responsible for handling 3rd party property damage and bodily injury claims fairly and to conclusion, as well as handling all 1st and 3rd party litigation. The Specialty Claims Adjuster assists in resolving claim-related complaints and disputes on the Company's behalf, and serves as the company liason to Hartford Steam Boiler for specified coverages and claims.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1) In compliance with the Unfair Claims Practices Act, promptly investigate, properly defend, and/or resolve 3rd party Virginia claims.
2) Determine the facts, defenses, damage estimate, and scope of injury to properly evaluate property damage and bodily injury claims.
3) Follow large loss and reinsurance reporting guidelines.
4) Properly document all correspondence and preserve evidence such as photos, diagrams, reports, and interviews.
5) Provide timely recommendations to Claims Manager for reserves and evaluations.
6) Communicate with claimants/plaintiffs and/or their representatives to reach settlement, or to advise of Loudoun Mutual’s intent to proceed with defense of the insured.
7) Attend mediations and trials.
8) As Hartford Steam Boiler liaison, submit Equipment Breakdown and Service Line claims. Assist with insured’s concerns and make claim payments.
9) For claims to be defended, select defense counsel and provide file documentation. Maintain communication with counsel throughout.
10) Report all injury payments to MMSEA per Medicare/Medicaid requirements through Examworks portal.
11) Communicate claim status to Claims Manager on a monthly basis, at minimum.
12) Assist with Catastrophe (CAT) storm claim processing, as needed.
13) Participates in regular, job-relevant training opportunities to maintain necessary skills.
14) Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Company agency partners.
15) Communicates promptly, professionally, and effectively across all methods.
16) Participates in Company staff meetings, trainings, and events as required.
17) Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Qualified candidates will have the following:
- Minimum of High School diploma or equivalency required, with particular emphasis on mathematical skills.
- Thorough knowledge of general office procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal English language communication and problem resolution abilities are required.
- Skilled in the use of computer systems and Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Exhibits empathy, courtesy, and respect when dealing with policyholders, agents, industry peers, and other employees.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.
- Valid driver’s license issued in home residence state.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to remain organized and manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to build and maintain strong business relationships.
- Exhibits independent judgment and discretion, including the proven ability to properly handle sensitive information.
- Performs repetitive tasks according to established procedures and instructions provided and is regularly empowered to make informed decisions without supervisory input.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and construction techniques.
- Previous work experience as a casualty claims adjuster, medical provider, or legal professional is preferred, though not required.
