John Evans Recruiting: Controller – Operational Accounting Leader for a $500M Private Company (CPA Required)
The Controller will serve as the senior operational accounting leader responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and scalability of the company’s financial operations. This role oversees day‑to‑day accounting, leads the month‑end and quarter‑end close, strengthens internal controls, and partners closely with executive leadership to support strategic growth. The ideal candidate brings deep technical accounting expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and experience operating within a dynamic, multi‑entity environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close Leadership
- Lead the month‑end and quarter‑end close process and lead the general ledger across entities.
- Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting packages.
- Manage and develop the accounting operations team responsible for:
- Investment accounting, including cash flow and amortization schedules, journal entries, variance analysis, and reconciliations.
- General ledger, accounts payable, and equity administration.
- Accounting for debt instruments such as term loans, commercial paper, and revolving credit facilities.
- Serve as a key partner to FP&A and Tax to ensure forecasting models reflect accurate financial data and current business activity.
- Analyze financial performance, trends, and operating metrics, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Align accounting operations with evolving business needs, growth initiatives, and strategic priorities.
- Lead coordination with external and internal auditors, managing timelines, deliverables, and responses to audit requests.
- Support financial system implementations, enhancements, and integrations to improve reporting capabilities and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; active CPA required.
- 10+ years of combined public accounting and corporate accounting experience, including experience in public‑company or investment‑fund environments.
- Prior supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to lead and develop high‑performing teams.
- Experience in financial services, investment management, or related industries strongly preferred.
