About the Role
As a Staff Pharmacist at Howard University Hospital, you will provide pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages across our inpatient setting. You will assume legal responsibility for the accurate interpretation and timely processing of medication orders, collaborate with physicians and clinical teams, and serve as a trusted drug information resource that keeps patient care safe and effective.
What You'll Do
- Provide pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages in an effective, efficient manner, collaborating with a wide range of hospital personnel.
- Assume legal responsibility for the proper interpretation and timely processing of medication orders, and maintain an accurate medication profile for each patient, checking all medications prepared for dispensing.
- Evaluate medication orders relative to age, organ function, and underlying disease to ensure appropriate drug therapy, and intervene with physicians to correct or clarify ambiguous or erroneous orders.
- Monitor and forecast pharmaceutical inventory levels to support efficient, economical pharmacy operations.
- Serve as a drug information resource on medication availability, therapeutic alternatives, special precautions, IV compatibility, and contraindications.
- Document adverse drug events and medication errors in Safety Intelligence and help determine corrective action plans to educate staff.
- Recommend alternatives for non-formulary drug requests and coordinate procurement of non-formulary drugs with the Director of Pharmacy when needed.
- Ensure proper labeling, packaging, and storage of all pharmaceutical products dispensed, and maintain prepackaged medications and supplies.
- Use Soarian Clinicals and related systems to support accurate order verification and documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited institution.
- Registration as a Pharmacist in the District of Columbia, or eligibility for reciprocity from another jurisdiction.
- Expert knowledge of pharmaceutical practice and best practices.
- Familiarity with handling, storing, and special preparation techniques for pharmaceuticals.
- Ability to provide pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages in an accurate, effective, and efficient manner.
- High attention to detail, including careful checking of pediatric/neonatal orders and prepared doses.
- Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well independently and cooperatively within a team, adapting to daily assignments and frequent interruptions.
- Computer literacy, with the ability to master software required for prescription verification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited institution.
- PGY1 residency training.
- One (1) year of experience as a pharmacist.
