Job description

At Horace Mann, we're committed to helping educators and their families through life's important moments. As a Group Claims Support Specialist, you'll play a vital role in supporting our Group Claims team by ensuring claims are processed efficiently, documentation is accurate, and customers receive timely, responsive service.

This position is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys organization, collaboration, and providing exceptional support in a fast-paced environment. You'll work closely with Group Claims Examiners while gaining valuable experience across Life, Disability, and other Group Insurance products.

Key Responsibilities

Claims Administration & Processing

  • Support Group Claims Examiners by gathering, verifying, and entering claim information into the claims management system.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain complete and accurate electronic claim files.
  • Set up new claims and maintain accurate records throughout the claim lifecycle.
  • Scan, upload, index, and manage electronic and physical claim documents.
  • Assist with claim filing, archiving, retrieval of archived files, and other administrative support activities.

Document & Workflow Management

  • Review incoming mail, electronic correspondence, faxes, and documents for completeness and appropriate routing.
  • Evaluate disability applications for required documentation and request additional information from applicants or employers when necessary.
  • Route claim documentation to the appropriate Claims Examiner.
  • Set up and maintain disability claim records within the paperless claims management system.
  • Update policy and employer information within internal systems, including PolicyPro and Microsoft Access.

Customer & Business Partner Support

  • Respond to routine inquiries from policyholders, beneficiaries, employers, and business partners regarding claim status.
  • Prepare and distribute correspondence, reports, commission checks, FICA billings, and other claim-related communications.
  • Process vendor and medical provider invoices for payment.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely and accurate claim support.

Operational Excellence

  • Generate reports and summaries to support claims operations and management.
  • Participate in special projects and departmental initiatives as assigned.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and service while meeting established productivity and quality expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows and support continuous process improvement. 

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in an administrative, operations, or support role within the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Familiarity with claims administration or claims management systems.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.

Pay Range:

  • $21.44- $29.16/hr.
