Role Summary
High Tech Communications is seeking a Senior Network & Security Engineer to design, secure, and operate mission-critical customer and data centre infrastructure. This role is hands-on, technical, and autonomous, requiring deep expertise in networking, security, and unified communications.
This position is not entry-level support. You will be trusted to make architectural decisions, lead complex configurations, respond to escalations, and proactively improve customer environments using modern, secure, and scalable technologies.
Core Responsibilities
Network Architecture & Switching
- Design and implement enterprise-grade switching environments
- Architect and configure VLANs, trunking, and port-level security
- Optimize network performance, segmentation, and resiliency
- Provide authoritative hardware and topology recommendations
Firewall & Security Engineering
- Architect, deploy, and manage Sophos and Fortinet firewalls in customer and data centre environments
- Design secure rule sets, NAT policies, and threat prevention profiles
- Implement best practices for IDS/IPS, application control, and security hardening
- Analyze logs, alerts, and traffic flows to proactively mitigate risks
VPN & Secure Connectivity
- Design, deploy, and support advanced site-to-site VPNs
- Sophos-to-Sophos
- Sophos-to-third-party firewalls
- Troubleshoot complex tunnel instability, latency, and routing issues
- Ensure secure remote connectivity aligned with modern security standards
Wireless Network Engineering
- Design and optimize high-performance WiFi environments
- Conduct predictive and active wireless surveys and heat mapping
- Select and configure enterprise access points for density, roaming, and reliability
- Tune RF environments to support voice, video, and real-time applications
Video Surveillance Solutions
- Architect and support modern IP video surveillance systems
- Provide strategic recommendations for education and enterprise customers
- Ensure secure network integration and performance optimization
Unified Communications & Voice
- Provide advanced support for Mitel platforms, including Mitel Connect
- Ensure QoS, network readiness, and high availability for voice services
- Troubleshoot complex voice and call-quality issues across WAN and LAN
Monitoring, Alerting & Incident Response
- Own proactive monitoring and alert response processes
- Participate in senior-level on-call rotation
- Perform early detection, root cause analysis, and remediation
- Respond to customer-impacting and data centre incidents with confidence and urgency
Service Delivery & Escalations
- Act as an escalation point for complex service issues
- Lead resolution of high-impact incidents and MAC requests
- Ensure work is executed to a high technical and documentation standard
Compliance & Standards
- Configure and maintain CORK-compliant environments where required
- Ensure security, networking, and documentation meet regulatory and industry best practices
Documentation & Technical Standards
- Produce and maintain detailed network diagrams (Visio)
- Maintain accurate configuration records and secure credential management
- Perform technical site surveys and infrastructure assessments
- Contribute to internal standards, best practices, and continuous improvement
Required Experience & Expertise
- 7+ years in network, security, or MSP engineering roles
- Advanced knowledge of switching, routing, VLANs, and firewall architectures
- Hands-on expertise with Sophos and/or Fortinet security platforms
- Strong understanding of VPNs, WAN connectivity, and network security principles
- Proven experience designing WiFi for real-world environments
- Deep troubleshooting skills across layered network stacks
- Comfortable owning decisions, incidents, and customer outcomes
