Job Description

The Ministry of Community Safety has a two-year term opportunity for highly motivated individuals who are team players and interested in a rewarding career as a Special Constable - Scale Officer. Your primary goal will be to protect the highway infrastructure and ensure the safety of all highway users by monitoring commercial vehicle compliance with National Safety Code requirements and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance standards. This goal will be achieved through the operation of permanent Commercial Vehicle Inspection Stations.

As a Scale Officer, you will enforce transportation legislation, policies, and agreements for commercial vehicles travelling on Saskatchewan's provincial highway system. You will be responsible for checking commercial vehicle operators for licensing, certification, and insurance, and inspecting commercial vehicles for safety, weights, dimensions, permits, and registration. You will be responsible for conducting inspections, laying charges, appearing in court, conducting investigations, and preparing reports. Your exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, promotion of a cooperative work environment, and innovative approach will be required in order to interact with team members, other enforcement and government agencies, as well as the commercial transportation industry.

The successful candidates will be required to work shift work, some travel with overnight stays away from your headquarters, hold a valid First Aid Certificate (including AED), and hold a valid Class 5 driver's license with a good rating.

You will be required to successfully complete all training related to commercial vehicle enforcement, including the CVSA North American Standard Inspectors' course and complete use of force training to the standard of the Saskatchewan Police College.

To qualify for this position, you will:

  • Be required to complete physical/medical assessments, which include passing the Sheriff Officers' Physical Abilities Test (SOPAT);
  • Possess a valid Canadian driver's license (Required to provide a copy of driver's license with application), and if selected for medical/physical testing, you will be required to provide a copy of a Certified Drivers Abstract on your scheduled testing date;
  • Possess a valid First Aid Certificate, including AED, that must be valid to May 2027 or beyond;
  • (Required to provide a valid certificate with the application); and,
  • Be required to pass a psychological personality assessment (MMPI) to determine suitability for law enforcement.
