Job Description

Role Overview:

As a Lead Product Designer at Couchbase, you will play a crucial role in shaping intuitive experiences for the flagship product, Capella, a cloud-native database-as-a-service platform. Your responsibilities will include leading design initiatives from concept to execution, transforming complex workflows into simple, scalable, and effective solutions for developers and enterprises. This position requires a combination of strategic thinking, hands-on design craft, and leadership to influence product direction and enhance the overall user experience. You will work closely with global design leadership to ensure high-quality design execution within the established Capella UX direction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of end-to-end product experiences for Couchbase, with a specific focus on Capella, guiding the process from initial concept to polished execution.
  • Explore a wide range of design options and effectively communicate tradeoffs for each approach.
  • Ensure design quality, completeness, and consistency for work delivered by the Bangalore design team.
  • Collaborate with designers to co-design workflows, review work in progress, and maintain a shared quality bar for Capella UX.
  • Make design tradeoffs considering speed, quality, and scalability in a complex platform product.
  • Engage with engineering early on to clarify intent and constraints, reducing downstream design and implementation rework.
  • Conduct lightweight, high-signal user research with developers and operators, and synthesize insights into actionable design decisions even when data is incomplete.
  • Exercise sound design judgment and escalate cross-team UX decisions or tradeoffs when alignment cannot be reached.
  • Provide constructive design feedback and mentor junior designers.
  • Maintain and evolve the Capella design system in collaboration with engineering, ensuring consistency, scalability, and pragmatic adoption across teams.

Qualifications Required:

  • Experience in designing products for specialized audiences such as developers, SREs, and DBAs, with familiarity in database software.
  • Proficiency in conducting user research and applying insights to design decisions.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a UX or Product Designer, with a portfolio showcasing your best work.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex product briefs into simple, intuitive experiences.
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate design concepts and rationale.
  • Proficient with Figma and AI tools.
