Online Oral English Tutor for Down Syndrome Children

ConnectPlus is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Virginia in the United States, founded in March 2020 by a group of high school and college students. We seek to make high-quality English education easily accessible to all. Since 2020, ConnectPlus has recruited 500+ tutors worldwide and taught 600+ students across China, logging 10,000+ hours of English instruction.

HSE is ConnectPlus' English-tutoring branch. HSE is happy to provide verification of volunteer hours (for community service requirements), volunteer certificates, and recommendations. Volunteering experiences with HSE can also be submitted as part of resumes for college and job applications.

ConnectPlus is dedicated to making English-learning opportunities available for everyone, including people with special needs. The TBB (Tangbaobao) Program is specifically designed for children with Down’s Syndrome.

Program Setting

• Tutors will give students one-on-one classes on Tencent Meeting;
• Each class lasts for 45 minutes long;
• Class discussions will be based on HSE’s TBB Class Materials;
• After class, tutors will send to the student a comment and a vocab list.

Volunteer Requirements

• Are native/proficient/advanced English speakers;
• Are native/proficient/advanced Chinese speakers;
• (If in China) have VPN and access to Google;
• Are able to maintain a minimum weekly commitment of one 45-minute lesson and 15 minutes for preparation and after-class feedback.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experiences in English teaching (formal and informal);
• Any degrees in an English or education-related field.
• High school student or older.

Once you are paired with your student, you will only be working with that TBB student. ConnectPlus will provide you with a volunteer certificate when you need it or if you leave the program. Volunteering experiences at ConnectPlus can also be listed on college applications under activity lists or on resumes for other purposes.
