Job Duties Of The Senior Payroll Tax Accountant

- Manage full cycle payroll tax compliance for a multi‑state employees, including accurate withholding, reporting, and remittance of federal, state, and local taxes
- Prepare, file, and reconcile all payroll tax returns (monthly, quarterly, and annual), including W‑2 and W‑2c processing and payroll system‑to‑GL reconciliations
- Handle complex multi‑jurisdictional taxation matters, including reciprocity rules, wage allocations (e.g., NY), and cross‑state employee compliance
- Serve as primary liaison with the IRS and state/local tax agencies, researching notices, resolving discrepancies, coordinating payments, and supporting payroll tax audits
- Manage state‑specific programs and reporting, including paid leave programs, labor statistics, workers’ compensation reports, and related filings
- Review and implement payroll system tax updates, test system changes, reconcile ADP invoices, and ensure accurate payroll tax accounting entries in the general ledger
- Develop and maintain payroll tax controls, policies, and procedures; ensure audit readiness, SOC support, and compliance with evolving tax regulations
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with HR, Finance, Tax, IT, and external vendors, mentor junior staff, prepare payroll tax reports and projections, and support special projects as needed
Qualifications For The Senior Payroll Tax Accountant
- 7+ years' payroll tax experience
- Must be well versed in multistate US payroll taxes
- International payroll knowledge a plus
- Experience using Workday, Oracle PeopleSoft, and/or ADP for payroll processing a plus
- Degree in a related field a plus but not required
- Proficient in MS Excel (must be able to do vlookup)
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse backgrounds
- Must be detail oriented with the ability to work independently
- Must be able to pass a background check
Salary: $80,000-$90,000
Schedule: Monday – Friday flexible start time. Hybrid work opportunity (T-Th in Bowie, MD to start)
