Position Summary
Wearable, Interactive, and Mobile Technologies Access Center in Health (WIMTACH), funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), is Centennial College’s first Technology Access Center (TAC) fostering growth and creating dynamic partnerships between students, faculty and industry partners. WIMTACH supports and advances the businesses of Small and Medium-Size Enterprises (SMEs) in Canada by serving as their Research and Development (R&D) partner for their technology requirements. Consequently, WIMTACH cultivates learning, applied research, innovation and solutions that transform the lives of communities.
The Research Associate, Electronics plays a crucial role in applied research projects at the WIMTACH. The Research Associate works with faculty members or acts as technical lead for the applied research projects and supports a variety of projects focused on the research and development of new technology and prototypes. It includes working on the entire Electronics Development Life Cycle, designing and developing sensors and sensor systems, testing system usability, critical analysis of existing electronics and software systems, and related activities. In this role, the incumbent will have an opportunity of working with research professionals from other institutions, industry partners, professors, staff, and students. The incumbent also represents WIMTACH at various industry events in the research field, and develops external partnerships to strengthen WIMTACH's positioning in the digital healthcare industry.
Responsibilities
- Provide System Analysis support to analyze and identify the needs of partner companies by evaluating current procedures and processes being used by Partner Company; by leading brainstorming sessions with company’s technical and business staff to understand their technical and business requirements
- Prepare and evaluate alternative work flow solutions to solve the problems identified, determine the technical feasibility of potential projects
- Assign work to student researchers, track milestones and project progress, solve technical issues and lead brainstorming and problem-solving sessions with teams of student researchers
- Collaborate with Centennial faculty members, ensuring that the project team works together cohesively to solve technical problems
- Maintain clear communication among team members and with external industry partners through email, phone and in-person communication
- Chair weekly update meetings with Industry partners where work done is reviewed and next steps are decided
- Guide the development process and ensure that projects meet the predefined objectives and are completed within budget
- Develop training or workshop modules on area of expertise and conduct the same on a bi-weekly basis or weekly basis, as deemed necessary, to clienteles, faculty, and students; maintain modules to reflect current technology utilized by industry
- Attend relevant networking events, meetings, workshops, conferences and present research work as needed
- Other related duties and responsibilities as required
Qualifications/Experience
- Four (4) year Degree in the field of Electronics Engineering or equivalent; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Five (5) years’ of experience in electronics and software development within an applied research and development setting
- Experience working in a technology start-up with strong knowledge of research and innovation strategies, programs and plans at the federal and provincial levels
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; experience with developing grants for funding proposals
- Strong interpersonal skills and relationship management skills
- Demonstrated ability to assist with equipment operation and data acquisition systems, sensor integration and system design
- Strong knowledge on Micro-Controller, OP-Amps, VLSI & Embedded Systems, Antenna theory, RF and Microwave, Optical Electronics, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Communication; and MATLAB, C++, C, Python, Arduino, and related programming preferred
- Strong project management and time management experience
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
- Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office
