To learn more about CIBC, please visit CIBC.com What you'll be doing As Senior Counsel, Personal Banking, you’ll provide centralized legal advice within the Legal Department on e-commerce laws including AI related regulations and codes, and provide seamless advice in relation to these matters in the context of client contracts, including terms, conditions, and disclosures. You will also provide legal advance on personal banking products and processes, which may include providing advice on matters as diverse as lending or deposits, including tokenized deposits and related services such as debit cards, Interac e-Transfer services, and overdraft services, as well as the legislation and regulatory requirements that apply to them. Using strong judgment, broad legal knowledge, and a collaborative approach, you’ll work closely with business and functional partners to support Personal Banking priorities, negotiate with third parties, prepare and review client-facing materials, and advise on regulatory developments. In this role, you’ll help identify and manage legal and regulatory risk while developing practical guidance on emerging issues affecting the business. How you'll succeed Provide legal advice - Deliver proactive, practical legal advice grounded in the Bank Act, consumer protection legislation, and applicable codes of conduct. Support Personal Banking products and services by negotiating, drafting, and advising on legal and regulatory matters while helping to mitigate legal, regulatory, and reputational risk. You will actively track, monitor and communicate requirements in regards to developing laws in relation to AI. Conduct legal research and analysis - Research legal issues, prepare clear and well-supported legal opinions, and present recommendations to business partners and Legal colleagues as appropriate. Review policies, procedures, and client-facing materials to help ensure compliance with legal requirements and reduce exposure to risk. Support product and service development - Participate in initiatives related to product and service development by identifying legal considerations early, assessing potential risks, and contributing to practical mitigation strategies. Provide guidance on regulatory changes and emerging issues that may affect Personal Banking as well as ecommerce laws as they impact delivery of CIBC’s products and services to clients generally. Build strong partnerships - Develop and maintain effective working relationships with designated lines of business through open communication and a strong understanding of business priorities. Partner with Communications, Compliance, Risk, and other functional teams to resolve legal and regulatory issues and provide subject matter expertise. Collaborate across teams - Work closely with colleagues across the Legal Department to share legal knowledge, best practices, and industry insights. Engage external counsel, in consultation with leadership, to support efficient, cost-effective delivery and strong legal outcomes where needed. Who you are You’re a certified professional. You have been called to the Bar in Ontario and are a member in good standing. You have relevant experience. You bring at least six years of related experience, including significant experience gained at a top-tier law firm or a major corporation in corporate or commercial law. Experience with federal statutes such as the Bank Act or Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation Act, provincial or territorial consumer protection legislation, and deposit products is considered a strong asset. You bring strong legal and analytical judgment. You enjoy investigating complex issues, assessing risk, and turning detailed information into clear, practical advice. You’re confident communicating nuanced legal guidance in a way that is useful and actionable for your audience. You’re driven to make an impact.
