DevOps Engineer – Java / CI-CD / Kubernetes

Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

To be successful DevOps Engineer you should have experience with:

• Strong understanding of DevOps principles across full SDLC, Design and maintain GitLab-based CI/CD pipelines with standardized build, test, and deploy stages
• Hands-on experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines and SCM
• Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes / OpenShift
• Experience with Terraform, Ansible and cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Experience with DevSecOps tooling (SonarQube, Veracode, Wiz, Prisma)
• Scripting/programming experience (Java, Python, Bash)
• Experience implementing automated CI/CD pipelines, quality gates, testing and deployment strategies
• Strong knowledge of containerisation, Helm charts and deployment strategies (blue/green, canary, rolling)

Some other highly valued skills may include:

• Experience with Kafka, Liquibase, MS SQL and distributed/event-driven systems
• Knowledge of observability tools (ELK, Kibana, Splunk, AppDynamics)
• Exposure to Agile practices using JIRA (DoR/DoD)
• Experience with Harness or release orchestration tools
• Understanding of Barclays TADS standards and cloud security practices (IAM, encryption, logging)
• Exposure to AI-assisted development tools (GitLab Duo / Copilot)
