Job Description

Senior Backend Developer (Node.js / AWS Serverless)

Overview

A high‑performing backend engineering team is expanding due to increased project demand and upcoming regulatory initiatives. They develop internal, business‑critical APIs used across major digital channels—including online banking and other enterprise applications.

All development is net‑new, modern, and built entirely on a serverless AWS stack. The team is looking for a senior‑level backend engineer who can ramp up quickly, take ownership of services, and contribute independently with minimal oversight.

Team size: 6 onshore developers (mix of senior & mid‑level engineers)

Line of Business: NARP (North American Retail Payments), Canadian P&BB (Personal & Business Banking) Technology

Est. Start Date: ASAP

Length of Contract: 6 month to start

Possibility of Extension?: Yes

Possibility of FTE?: Yes after contract ends

Physical Working Location (required): Downtown Toronto

Is this role remote?: Hybrid - 2 days a week (Tuesday & Thursday)

Team Overview

This team is responsible for backend API development and integration, supporting a range of internal, business‑critical services consumed by online channels such as online banking and other digital platforms. All services are internal‑facing and built on a modern AWS serverless stack.

The team is experiencing increased demand and an influx of new projects, including at least one regulatory initiative, and current capacity is not sufficient to meet delivery needs. As a result, the team is looking to add a senior‑level backend engineer who can ramp up quickly and contribute independently.

  • Team size: 6 onshore developers
  • Experience mix: 3 very senior engineers, 3 mid‑level
  • Work type: Primarily net‑new development, not legacy maintenance

What This Role Will Be Working On

The incoming engineer will focus on designing, building, and integrating RESTful APIs that power internal digital channels.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing new backend APIs and services using Node.js and TypeScript
  • Building and maintaining serverless services on AWS, including:
  • AWS Lambda
  • API Gateway
  • Supporting AWS services as needed
  • Integrating APIs with downstream and upstream internal systems
  • Supporting regulatory‑driven development where accuracy, reliability, and traceability are important
  • Writing clean, maintainable, and testable code for production environments
  • Participating in deployments through an AWS CI/CD pipeline
  • Collaborating with QA resources embedded in the team to ensure quality and coverage

This role is hands‑on and delivery‑focused, with an expectation that the engineer can own workstreams with minimal oversight once ramped.

Core Requirements

  • Node.js (production experience)
  • TypeScript
  • REST API design and development
  • AWS (hands‑on experience), especially:
  • AWS Lambda
  • API Gateway
  • Serverless architectures
  • Express.js or similar Node.js frameworks
  • Unit testing (the team has QA support, but developers are expected to write and maintain tests)
  • Experience deploying services through AWS pipelines / CI‑CD

Nice to Have

  • Experience using AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to improve productivity
