Major Duties
The Intermediate Systems Designer/Engineer manages the technical aspects of assigned projects and oversees all engineering requirements. This role involves working closely with customers, the project manager, and internal project teams to define, validate, and execute system requirements. You will become the subject matter expert on customer processes and drive improvements in quality, cost, and delivery.
Specific Responsibilities
Project Technical Leadership
- Provide technical oversight, problem‑solving, and coordination of all project engineering work.
- Support system startup, integration, and customer buy‑off.
- Assist in system concept development and labor estimates for quotations.
- Participate actively in design reviews.
- Support system design, development, execution planning, and progress monitoring.
- Identify and manage technical risks; develop mitigation plans.
- Model and test high‑risk system elements to validate design assumptions.
- Manage “process‑critical” third‑party equipment vendors to ensure compliance with requirements, budget, and schedule.
- Conduct acceptance testing and approve process‑critical third‑party equipment.
Subject Matter Expertise
- Learn and understand customer processes; act as the local process expert for system design and integration.
- Develop and manage POP (Proof of Principle) studies for high‑risk elements and design concepts.
- Prepare systems‑level design calculations, including: System accuracy, Metrology, instrumentation, Kinematics, Reliability, maintainability. Process capability, Gauge capability, Cycle time, Machine OEE
- Perform hands‑on testing as required.
Requirements Definition & Verification
- Prepare and document design requirements (e.g., Functional Requirements Specifications).
- Evaluate design outputs for compliance (e.g., Acceptance Test Plans).
- Assess overall machine performance (MOEE, cycle time, availability, yield).
- Prepare FMEAs (pFMEA, mFMEA, dFMEA) as required.
- Conduct machinery safety risk assessments.
- Interpret and flow down customer and industry requirements to ensure compliance.
- Create technical specifications for purchasing and validating specialized third‑party equipment.
Qualifications
Education
- Post‑secondary degree in Systems Design, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent).
- Note: P.Eng required to use the title “Engineer” in Ontario.
Experience
- 3+ years in mechanical, electrical, controls, or systems engineering, ideally in automation with customer interaction.
- Strong knowledge of robotics, machine controls, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to lead or work within a multidisciplinary project team.
