Senior Accountant – Grant & Reconciliation Focus
Type: Contract
Pay Rate: $37–$45 / hour
Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid – 2–3 days onsite)
Contract Length: 3-6 months
Schedule: Hybrid schedule with flexibility based on team needs
Hours: 40 hour working week

Role Overview
A mission-driven organization is seeking a Senior Accountant to support core accounting operations with a focus on account reconciliations, grant accounting, and financial accuracy. This role will play a key part in month-end close, maintaining the integrity of financial data, and ensuring compliance with grant and donor requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, systems-savvy, and experienced working in fast-paced environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform complex account reconciliations, including bank, balance sheet, and sub-ledger accounts
- Lead and support month-end and year-end close processes
- Manage and track grant-related financial activity, ensuring compliance with funding requirements
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and supporting schedules
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data
- Collaborate cross-functionally with finance, operations, and program teams
- Maintain and improve accounting processes and internal controls
- Utilize Sage Intacct for general ledger, reporting, and financial management
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required)
- 4+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or grant-funded environment
- Strong account reconciliation and month-end close experience
- Hands-on experience with grant accounting and compliance
- Proficiency with Sage Intacct (required)
- Advanced Excel skills and strong attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with federal or donor-funded grants (e.g., government, foundation funding)
- CPA or CPA-track is a plus
- Experience improving processes or implementing accounting systems
