Job Title: Phlebotomist III

Job Description

The Phlebotomist III plays a key role in delivering high-quality laboratory services by performing complex specimen collection, handling, and processing in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role combines advanced phlebotomy skills with troubleshooting, training support, and workflow improvement recommendations to ensure accurate, timely, and safe laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy prior to processing.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity at all times.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport according to protocol and regulatory requirements.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, following all protocols to preserve sample quality.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support safe and efficient laboratory operations.
  • Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems and documentation as required.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
  • Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for specimen transport and testing.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and compliance standards.
  • Attend and participate in annual departmental trainings and ongoing education to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries in accordance with policies.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Support the training of staff by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices when needed.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • 5–7 years of overall experience, including substantial hands-on phlebotomy and specimen handling responsibilities.
  • Proven proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draws.
  • Demonstrated ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions to specimens, and verifying orders.
  • Ability to collect, store, and process specimens according to strict procedures and protocols.
  • Competence in updating patient information and recording maintenance and decontamination data accurately.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to apply them in daily practice.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and reporting.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

This is a Contract position based out of College Park, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
