Job description

Walker Farms is a large cattle and grain operation located near Borden, Saskatchewan. We operate a diverse fleet of agricultural and commercial equipment. We are seeking a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic & Fleet Manager to take ownership of our equipment maintenance, fleet performance, and shop operations.

Position Overview

This is a full-time, year-round position based out of our main mechanic shop in the Town of Borden, Sask. The Heavy Duty Mechanic & Fleet Manager will be responsible for overseeing the repair, maintenance, organization, and lifecycle management of all company vehicles and equipment. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines mechanical expertise with equipment procurement, inventory control, and supplier management.

Key Responsibilities

-Fleet & Equipment Maintenance

-Diagnose, repair, and maintain all farm and commercial vehicles and equipment, including: pickup trucks & SUVs, semi trucks and trailers (including super B trailers, grain trailers, cattle trailers, cattle liners), feed mixer trucks and wagons, combines, harrows, seeders, sprayers, tractors, grain carts and augers, excavator, forklifts, wheel loaders, and various small equipment

-Perform preventative maintenance and seasonal inspections.

-Minimize downtime during seeding, harvest, and feeding seasons.

-Maintain detailed service and maintenance records.

Fleet Management & Procurement

-Assist in buying and selling equipment.

-Evaluate equipment performance and lifecycle planning

-Coordinate major repairs and outsourced services when required.

-Maintain strong relationships with parts suppliers, dealerships, machine shops, and service providers.

-Contribute to budgeting, cost tracking, and long-term capital planning for fleet and equipment.

Shop Organization & Inventory Control

-Order, organize, and maintain accurate inventory of: oil, lubricants, filters, parts and shop supplies, materials and consumables, diagnostic equipment, cordless tools and specialty tools

-Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient shop.

-Track inventory levels and manage budgets responsibly.

Safety & Equipment Operation

-Safely operate shop equipment including crane, air systems, welders, and other shop tools.

-Ensure safe storage and use of parts, materials, and equipment.

-Promote a common-sense safety and preventative maintenance culture within the shop and yard.

Qualifications

-Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic certification is preferred; however, candidates with sufficient relevant experience will also be considered.

-Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills (mechanical, hydraulic, electrical).

-Experience with agricultural equipment and heavy trucks preferred.

-Welding and fabrication experience is considered an asset.

-Strong organizational and inventory management skills.

-Ability to work independently and manage priorities.

-Valid driver’s license.

-Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Location & Living Requirements

Position is based in Borden, Saskatchewan.

The ideal candidate will live within reasonable proximity to Borden, as we are not always able to provide long-term accommodations.
