Job Description
Compensation: $235,000 - $255,000
Team & Position Details:
Virtru is building a Delivery Engineering team within our new Customer Solutions and Engineering (CSE) organization. This team has a dual mission: develop reusable deployment accelerators and automation tools that enable our delivery teams to implement solutions faster and with higher quality, AND build custom integrations and solutions for customers with specialized technical requirements.
As the Director of Delivery Engineering, you'll lead a team of software engineers who sit at the intersection of product engineering and customer delivery. Your team builds the tools, automation, and frameworks that transform customer deployments from manual, labor-intensive projects into repeatable, scalable processes. You'll also establish our capability to deliver high-value custom integration work-connecting Virtru products to specialized customer environments, building custom policy enforcement points, and solving complex technical challenges that become billable engineering services.
You'll report directly to the EVP of Customer Solutions and Engineering and lead a team of engineers with software development backgrounds. Your stakeholders include Solutions Architects who design customer solutions, Forward Deployed Engineers who execute deployments using your tools, Professional Services leadership managing delivery timelines, and Product Engineering teams whose roadmaps intersect with customer needs.
This role requires both technical depth and strategic thinking. You need to understand what customers need, prioritize what to automate versus what to leave manual, determine when custom work should become reusable tooling, and build a team that can operate in both production-quality tooling development and rapid custom integration delivery.
As Director of Delivery Engineering, your responsibilities will include:
- Develop automation that generates compliance-ready baseline environments, eliminating manual configuration of security controls across various frameworks (NIST, FedRAMP, HIPAA, etc.)
- Build deployment tooling that reduces labor intensity and accelerates implementation timelines: environment assessment automation, configuration management, security documentation generators, and integration frameworks
- Lead development of customer-specific integrations and solutions through billable statement-of-work projects, including custom policy enforcement points and specialized system integrations
- Prioritize automation roadmap balancing quick wins versus foundational infrastructure investments, assessing realistic delivery timelines with available resources
- Determine when custom integration work is one-time (billable project) versus reusable (accelerator candidate) and establish processes to identify high-value automation opportunities
- Leverage AI and machine learning tools to accelerate development velocity, identify deployment patterns that warrant automation, and solve complex customer integration challenges
- Hire, mentor, and develop software engineers while establishing engineering practices appropriate for building both internal tooling and customer-facing deliverables
- Track automation adoption rates, time savings per engagement, and ROI through measurable deployment efficiency improvements
- Partner with Product Engineering to influence product roadmap based on field deployment insights and customer needs
- Build feedback loops with delivery teams to continuously improve tooling based on real-world usage and business outcomes
Required Skills
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years in engineering leadership roles
- Proven expertise in building deployment automation, developer tooling, or infrastructure-as-code solutions
- Strong programming skills in languages like Go, Python, Java, or similar (Go strongly preferred)
- Experience leveraging AI-powered development tools (GitHub Copilot, Code, Claude Code, etc.) to accelerate code development and solve technical challenges
- Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and building scalable systems
- Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation (Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
- Track record of balancing technical quality with pragmatic delivery-shipping tools that solve real problems
- Hands-on leadership style: comfortable staying close to code, participating in design reviews, and making technical decisions
- Strong prioritization skills: ability to assess what to build, what to defer, and what to avoid
- Excellent stakeholder management: can understand customer needs, translate them into technical requirements, and manage expectations
Desired Skills
- Experience applying AI/ML techniques to identify automation opportunities, analyze deployment patterns, or optimize delivery processes
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks (NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, HIPAA, PCI-DSS) and security automation
- Understanding of data security, encryption, access control systems, or identity management
- Experience in professional services, consulting, or customer-facing engineering roles
- Experience deploying solutions in on-premise, air-gapped, or highly regulated environments
- Active security clearance or experience working in cleared environments (TS/SCI preferred)
- Experience building integration frameworks, SDKs, or APIs that other engineers consume
- Experience maintaining developer-facing tooling
- Understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
- Track record in startup or high-growth environments where you've built engineering capabilities from early stages
Virtruvian qualities that will set you up for success:
- Thinking outside of the box to respectfully challenge your teammates and managers in the pursuit of excellence
- Strong sense of urgency with an action-oriented mindset-bias toward shipping tools that solve immediate problems while building toward long-term vision
- Able to collaborate and adapt to shifting priorities as business needs evolve
- Comfortable with asynchronous communication including Slack, email, Zoom, etc.
- Natural curiosity about customer problems and how automation can solve them
- Balance between perfectionism and pragmatism-knowing when "good enough" enables progress
