Senior Azure DevOps Engineer - Job Description (7-8 Years)

Role Overview

Job Title

Senior Azure DevOps Engineer

Experience

7-8 Years

Engagement Type

Full-Time (1 FTE)

Role Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Azure DevOps Engineer with 7-8 years of enterprise experience to drive end-to-end modernization of CI/CD, branching, environment configuration, repository architecture, and incremental deployment frameworks across enterprise repositories on Azure DevOps (ADO). The engineer will own delivery of the Hybrid GitFlow rollout, Azure Data Factory / Databricks / ADLS pipeline redesign with ARM-based incremental deployments, Azure Repos rearchitecture, and EDI Function Apps CI/CD transformation while standardizing reusable pipeline templates, variable governance, and secret management via Azure Key Vault.

Key ResponsibilitiesBranching Strategy & CI/CD Standardization

Implement Hybrid GitFlow (feature develop UAT main) across all pending repositories with controlled promotion flow.

Configure branch protection policies on main, UAT, and develop disabling direct commits/force pushes and enforcing PR-only merges.

Establish feature branch naming standards (feature/-description) and hotfix workflows (hotfix/* from main).

Build a single dynamic CI pipeline that determines the target environment based on the triggering branch and applies environment-specific variables.

Apply semantic version tagging (e.g., v1.0.0) for release traceability and audit compliance.

Design and validate rollback strategy using the previous stable tag from main.

Environment Configuration Management Modernization

Decentralize environment configurations; redesign pipeline templates with modular, reusable architecture.

Implement Azure Key Vault integration for secure secret handling and credential rotation.

Set up ADO Variable Groups, segregate variables across DEV/UAT/PROD, and enforce environment isolation.

Drive pipeline cleanup and governance to eliminate DEV/UAT/PROD behavior mismatch.

Repository Structure & Deployment Management Standardization (Azure Repos Rearchitecture)

Rearchitect Azure Repos into a modular repository structure with path-based CI triggers for faster, scoped builds.

Build centralized YAML templates and reusable pipeline libraries for scalable deployments.

Realign repo-to-pipeline-to-variable mappings under centralized governance, security policies, and standardized documentation.

Azure Data Pipeline Deployment Optimization (ADF, Databricks, ADLS)

Redesign Azure Data Factory (ADF) deployment for selective incremental deployments using modular ARM/YAML templates.

Build incremental ARM deployment logic with parameterized templates, branch promotion strategy, validation gates, and rollback mechanism.

Implement Azure Databricks CI/CD notebook deployment via Repos, DBFS/Workspace APIs, job/cluster configuration as code, and Unity Catalog awareness.

Standardize Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS Gen2) path management, ACLs, and lifecycle policies across DEV/UAT/PROD.

EDI Function Apps CI/CD Transformation

Decompose the monolithic Azure Function App delivery model into independent repositories with isolated CI/CD pipelines.

Build reusable deployment standards, artifact standardization, validation gates, and a testing framework.

Establish deployment modularization and clear ownership alignment per Function App.

Governance, Quality & Release Management

Enforce automated quality gates SonarQube, unit tests, security scans before promotion to UAT main.

Manage release calendars, smaller release cycles, and controlled release windows to prevent overlap and deployment confusion.

Lead incident mitigation for merge conflicts, regression failures, hotfix conflicts, and rollback failures.

Primary Skills (Must-Have)1. Azure DevOps (ADO) Reusable Template Architecture, Secrets, Variables & Environments

Hands-on expertise in Azure Pipelines (multi-stage YAML), reusable template architecture (templates, parameters, extends, step/job/stage templates), and template libraries.

Strong command of ADO Variable Groups, pipeline variables, runtime parameters, and variable scoping across stages.

Proficient with Azure Key Vault-linked variable groups for secret management and rotation.

Mastery of ADO Environments, approvals, checks, deployment gates, and service connections.

Experience with branch policies, PR validation, build validation, and required reviewers in Azure Repos.

2. Azure Databricks, Azure Data Pipelines (ADF) with ARM-based Incremental Deployment & ADLS

Strong hands-on expertise in Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines, datasets, linked services, triggers, integration runtimes.

Deep understanding of ARM template generation for ADF and ability to design selective/incremental ARM deployment workflows.

Azure Databricks CI/CD notebook/workspace deployment, databricks-cli / REST API, job & cluster configuration as code, DBFS, and integration with Azure DevOps.

Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS Gen2) hierarchical namespace, ACLs/RBAC, lifecycle management, integration with ADF and Databricks.

Designing parameterized ARM templates, validation gates, and rollback mechanisms for data pipeline deployments.

3. Rearchitecture of Azure Repos, Pipelines & Variables

Proven experience in rearchitecting Azure Repos into modular structures with clear separation of application code, IaC, and pipeline templates.

Designing path-based CI triggers, monorepo vs. polyrepo strategies, and reusable pipeline libraries.

Refactoring legacy pipelines into centralized YAML templates with standardized variables, parameters, and environment mappings.

Establishing centralized variable governance across DEV/UAT/PROD and aligning repo-pipeline-variable ownership models.

Secondary Skills (Good-to-Have)

Terraform / Bicep for Azure resource provisioning

Azure Function Apps (deployment slots, isolated CI/CD per app)

PowerShell, Bash, Python for automation and pipeline scripting

Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights for pipeline and application observability

SonarQube integration and DevSecOps quality gates

Containerization basics Docker, AKS, Helm

Familiarity with Azure RBAC, Managed Identities, and Service Principals

Exposure to EDI integration patterns and enterprise data integration workflows

Soft Skills & Delivery Competencies

Strong stakeholder communication for PR governance, release sign-offs, and validation reviews.

Ability to author implementation plans, rollback runbooks, and governance documentation.

Analytical mindset for root-cause analysis of merge conflicts, regression failures, and production rollbacks.

Self-driven ownership across a ~19-week multi-track delivery roadmap.
