Full Time Evenings, 1:30pm to 10:00pm

Overview

The Laboratory Support Tech role is a hybrid position encompassing the duties of a Clinical Laboratory Assistant and a Phlebotomist. Under direct supervision, collects blood samples by performing venipunctures or finger or heel sticks on patients. Checks the quality of blood and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient, following established standards and practices. Processes all samples within the department, either manually or using automation equipment, including send-outs. Responsible for outstanding customer service through verbal and written communication.

1. Obtains venous and/or capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.

2. Utilizes a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information. Properly identifies and labels specimens for processing, delivery and storage.

3. Performs accurate and complete specimen registration, order entry and performs order checking of requisitions for proper data entry.

4. May operate simple medical laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge and microscope.

5. Effectively communicates with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, or storage.

6. Monitors pending work and resolves specimen issues as needed.

7. Sorts laboratory reports/mail and distributes them to appropriate mailboxes.

8. Performs inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients. Rotates stock to ensure outdating does not occur.

9. Fills all supply requests for client needs.

10. Responds to telephone inquiries for test results, specimen status, or other general inquiries. Communicates abnormal values to providers as necessary.

11. Assist with training new team members as needed.

12. Performs maintenance and troubleshoots instruments as needed.

Work Experience

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Basic medical laboratory knowledge, good organizational skills and commitment to quality specimen handing is preferred.
  • Basic phlebotomy skills preferred due to the familiarity of laboratory specimen collection and processing is preferred.
