Position: Controller (Non Profit)
Overview
A well-established nonprofit organization in the Alexandria, VA area is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead day-to-day accounting and finance operations within a complex, mission-driven environment. This individual will oversee the full accounting function, manage and mentor a team, and partner closely with executive leadership on financial reporting, compliance, process improvements, budgeting, and operational strategy.
This is an excellent opportunity for a strong accounting leader who enjoys balancing strategic oversight with hands-on involvement in the day-to-day accounting operations. Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Operations
- Lead all day-to-day accounting operations including:
- Accounts Payable
- Accounts Receivable
- Payroll
- Fixed Assets
- Inventory accounting
- Bank and account reconciliations
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
- Manage cash flow reporting and operational financial analysis
Reporting, Audit & Compliance
- Coordinate annual financial statement audits and support external auditors
- Assist with preparation and review of Form 990s and other regulatory/compliance filings
- Prepare board-level reporting packages and variance analysis
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and nonprofit reporting requirements
- Oversee tax filings, licensing requirements, and financial compliance matters
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff
- Partner cross-functionally with operational and business unit leaders
- Drive accounting process improvements, automation initiatives, and operational efficiencies
- Support an upcoming ERP/system implementation initiative
- Serve as a visible and collaborative finance leader across the organization
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior leadership experience overseeing accounting teams
- Strong understanding of:
- GAAP
- Internal controls
- Audit management
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Experience with in nonprofit organizations strongly preferred
- CPA strongly preferred
- Public accounting background highly preferred
- Experience with ERP systems and accounting system implementations highly desired
- Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to interact with executive leadership and board members
Preferred Experience
- Nonprofit accounting and compliance
- Form 990 preparation/review
- Sage Intacct or ERP implementation exposure
- Process improvement and operational transformation initiatives
