Accounting Manager (Government Contracting)

Location: Reston, VA (Hybrid)

We are partnering with a well-established, mission-driven government contractor to identify a hands-on Accounting Manager / GL Leader to join their growing finance team. This organization has a strong reputation supporting federal clients across multiple service lines and offers the stability of a large company with a collaborative, team-oriented culture.

This is a high-impact leadership role focused on owning the general ledger, leading the close process, and driving process improvements in a complex GovCon environment.

Position Overview The Accounting Manager will lead full-cycle general ledger operations, including month-end close, financial reporting, audit support, and compliance. This individual will manage a small team while remaining hands-on in day-to-day accounting activities.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being closely involved in the details, improving processes, and taking full ownership of the close in a government contracting environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Oversee general ledger and balance sheet management
  • Ensure compliance with FAR, CAS, and GAAP
  • Manage audits (DCAA, external auditors, IRS, and other agencies)
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls
  • Oversee cost pools, indirect rates, and allocations
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and indirect rate development
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AP, AR, Payroll, and Project teams
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience within government contracting
  • Strong knowledge of FAR, CAS, and GAAP
  • Experience with cost pools and indirect rate structures
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Preferred

  • CPA or CMA
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle Fusion or Lawson

Compensation & Schedule

  • Salary range: $130,000 – $140,000 (bonus eligible)
  • Hybrid schedule: 1–2 days onsite (more during initial onboarding/training)
