Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:   

The Community Ministries Coordinator position is a multifaceted position where the incumbent is expected to coordinate and provide oversight to all aspects of Community service programming.

Accountabilities

Programming:

  • Coordinate all existing and create and implement new community ministry programming as needed to ensure ministry unit objectives are accomplished.

  • Conduct a community needs assessment and strategic planning to ensure all Community Ministries programming reflects the needs of the community and client needs as these may evolve with the ever-changing socioeconomic climate.

  • Actively work to recruit new volunteers and work with existing volunteers (including student volunteers) to assist in day-to-day community ministry operations.

  • Ensure that community ministers programs meet contractual, legal, and internal accreditation requirements as required.

  • Collaborate with community agencies providing client referrals and support as needed.

  • Make necessary referrals to shelter, health care, professional counseling, spiritual and religious care, and other relevant support.

  • Support, advocate for, and refer clients to housing and related resources with the goal of reintegration into the community.

  • Provide emergency assistance services, i.e., meal referrals, clothing, hygiene in accordance with policy.

  • Coordinate and carry out programs, workshops, and special events, etc.

  • May provide feeding program oversight and support services based on community needs. i.e. ordering and/or receipt of food donations, recording, general cleanliness, organization.

  • Network with The Salvation Army, government and, community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program.

  • Support Emergency Response events or preparedness training as required.

Communication and Reporting:

  • Attend local community board meetings as required by the Ministry Unit

  • General administrative duties such as answering and directing phones, directing inquiries, email corresponding, etc.

  • Maintain accurate records of client information on The Salvation Army’s Client Management System (CMS) and Link2Feed while maintaining confidentiality and providing program, logs of activities, operational and statistical reports as required in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.

  • Ensure that Ministry Unit policies and procedures are followed for safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained, i.e., clothing vouchers, food gift cards.

  • Attend and participate in trainings and meetings as required by the Ministry Unit. Including meetings with the Corps Officer.

  • Submit a Community Ministries progress report to Corps Council as required.

  • Provide reporting and feedback to the Corps Officer from community meetings attended.

  • Assist with data analysis for program, recording statistics, writing, and submitting reports.

Seasonal Responsibilities: Christmas (More hours would be provided)

  • Assist with Christmas Kettle Fundraising Campaign

  • Coordinate the Christmas Toy Distribution Program (in consultation with the Corps Officers)

  • Develop relationships that will provide opportunities to recruit volunteers and solicit donations.

Summer Camp

  • Promote summer camps at The Salvation Army Beaver Creek Camp

  • Develop and carry out plan for connecting with camp attendees throughout the year.

Health and Safety

  • Responsible for abiding by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures and work in compliance with provincial Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.

Perform other duties as required.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: None

Internal:

  • Ministry Unit Staff, DHQ Corps Missions staff, THQ POH Regional Coordinator

External:

  •  Clients and their families, government agencies and local community support services

Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility:  

  • Reports directly to the Corps Officer

  • Oversee most of Community Ministries programming.

  • Supervise the Christmas toy program.

Financial and Materials Management

  • May handle gift cards up to $500.00 and use accounts set up by the ministry unit

Working Conditions:

  • This position is based on a minimum of 30 hours per week and up to 40 for seasonal coverage. 

  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required.

  • Time commonly spent in office environments in generally agreeable conditions, in service and administration areas of social service centers, or in Corps settings.

  • This position provides direct service to the community, supporting people from a diverse range of backgrounds and histories.

  • May be exposed to disagreeable people including the occasional angry and/or abusive client/public, working with people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

  • May be required to move/lift/transport awkward objects and/or materials of up to 20 lbs.

  • Travel is associated with this position {5 to 10%}; required to use a Salvation Army program vehicle when available.

The hours of work and work schedule will be set by your supervisor.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:  

  • Completion of a 2-year Community College diploma or certificate preferably in Social Services and/or Psychology.

  • A working knowledge of mental health and addiction issues.

  • Ability and willingness to provide a valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification

  • Safe Food Handlers Certification is required after start date

  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Power Point.

  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Some experience in a related field. Previous experience with program facilitation, administrative duties, and program development is an asset.

  • Demonstrated competence in developing and maintaining appropriate client relationships and interagency relations.

  • Valid Saskatchewan Class “5” Driver’s License, is required, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Possess knowledge and understanding of local resources for Mental Health and Addictions services, housing, income support and other support systems.

  • High standards of integrity, judgment and confidentiality and an ability to model the values and standards of The Salvation Army

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public, government, business leaders and professionals.

  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.

  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $21.96 to $27.45 with a maximum of $32.94.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
