Job Summary

Theconstructionskilledlaborerhelpsthepipelayerbyperformingdutiesrequiringtechnicalexperience.Dutiesincludeassistingwithlayingpipeforstormorsanitationsewers,drains, andwatermains. S/hemayassistintheperformanceofanycombinationofthefollowingtasks: gradetrenchesorculverts, position pipe,orsealjoints.Inadditiontoassistingpipelayers,theskilledlaboreralsoworksdiggingtrenchesfor/aroundexistingutilities,manuallyhelpwithensuringappropriategrading, andmovematerials/tools. Theskilledlaborerplaysamajordaytodayroletokeepworksitescleanandcompliant.

Duties & Responsibilities

Cleanorprepareconstructionsitestoeliminatepossiblehazards and prepare forplacementofaggregates,road/substrate,orutilities.
Signalequipmentoperatorstoalign,moveoradjustmachinery,equipment,ormaterials
Load,unload, and/oridentifymaterialsandtools
Digditchesortrenchesfor/aroundexistingutilities, back-fillexcavations, grade andleveltrenches;mayusetampingmachine and/orhandtools. NOTE: May betrainedtooperatesomeheavierequipment.
Performsgeneralconstructionwork(usinghandtools,liftingmaterialsonaverageupto50pounds)underdirectionofPipe Layer, Crew Leader, ForemanorSupervisor.
Mayperformflaggingdutiestocontrol andmaintainflowoftrafficinworkzone.
Performotherduties, as andwhenassigned.
Undersupervisionofpipelayersorsupervision,mayusetoolstoverifygrading/levelsurface.
Assistinaligningpipesmanuallyduringpipelineconstruction(generallyforwetutilities[water/sewer]).
Assisttoconnectpipes andsealjointsusingglue,cement,gasketsand/orflanges.

Qualifications

Musthavephysicalabilitytostandstrenuousanddangerousworkenvironment. Must becomfortableworkingin 15ft -20fttrenchesandotherconfinedspaces.
Hasphysicalstrengthdigandperformgenerallaborwithlaborercrews,includingdiggingbyhandandlifting/pushing/pullingmaterials.
Abletocommunicateeffectivelywithothersandworkcooperativelyinteams(includingresolvingbasicconflictswithorwithouttheassistanceofmanagement).
Handleemergencysituations,workpressureand stress.
Abletosolvebasic,common-senseproblemsusingexperienceandconstructionknowledge.
Musthave a flexible schedule(makeworkirregularoroddhoursinoutdoorworksites,dependinguponprojectneedsorweather),includingnightsandweekends.
Musthaveaccesstoowntransportationtoreachnon-standardworksitesduringnon-standardhours.
