About the role
In this role, you will commission and edit the best stories from a growing team of US-based correspondents and reporters, for The Telegraph.
You will coordinate coverage across the United States later in the day, providing extra editorial muscle to the bureau chief and associate news editor in Washington.
While primarily a commissioning role, you will also do breaking news reporting when required.
Key responsibilities
- Generating ideas, commissioning and editing for The Telegraph, working across a seven-day rota
- Liaising with correspondents in the US and acting as a point of contact during breaking news events and for longer term projects
- Working with desk editors from multiple departments (video, graphics, pictures) on breaking news and upcoming long term events
- Helping to plan for major forthcoming news events and generate original ideas
- Running liveblogs for major breaking news events, and writing breaking news stories
- Opportunity to build up your own areas of specialism and develop projects
Key skills
- Experience of news editing in a national or international newsroom
- Strong news sense, with the ability to seek out exclusives and breaking stories
- Experience of planning coverage of future news events and preparing diary items of news
- Experience of working to tight daily deadlines
- Strong ability to write and edit articles clearly, concisely and to house style
- Have a good working understanding of social media channels to both spot and promote stories
- Be familiar with and have experience of digital storytelling techniques, and how to promote content off platform
- Proficiency in a second language is desirable, but not essential
- Creativity and independence in commissioning and developing stories
- Familiarity with headline writing and techniques to help sell stories on various platforms
