A key goal for The Times is to increase reader engagement by improving the experience of connecting with Times journalism, particularly on our home screens. The Home team is at the heart of these engagement efforts in the newsroom, and we are seeking editors who are passionate about achieving that goal. Home editors are responsible for the programming and presentation of our own digital platforms, in support of our strategic goals. You will stay abreast of breaking news and recalibrate our presentation. You will also review the quality and tone of what we publish to ensure that Times standards are met and that our content is properly promoted. This is a temporary position with an expected duration of 6 months.
This is a hybrid position based in our New York City or DC offices, and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. The scheduled hours are 12-8 p.m., Sunday - Thursday with flexibility needed to support our global team schedule.
Responsibilities
- Master the production tools and workflows for our home screen(s)
- Handle fast-moving breaking news presentations with accuracy, quality and speed
- Write lively and compelling summaries, headlines and captions consistent with Times style
- Workshop and send push notifications and targeted emails
- Collaborate with product teams to provide insights and feedback about the tools and platforms used to produce and showcase our report
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
- You will report to a deputy editor on the Home team
Basic Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience as a digital news editor, working with audience data to inform programming decisions, including evaluating story performance, weighing reader interest and assessing the strategies and performance of our competitors
- Excellence in news judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics
- Ability to quickly and cleanly execute changes to the layout and order of our platforms while showing creativity and initiative in presentation and framing
- Working well under pressure, setting priorities among many tasks and keeping up with the demands of multiple editors and supervisors
- Sensitivity to visual design and user experience
Preferred Qualifications
- B.A. or B.S. degree
- Prior experience working with visual design and user experience

The hourly rate of base pay for this role is:
$62.61 - $63.19 USD
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
