This position involves the effective management of assigned Captive programs. As a Captives Insurance Underwriter, you will cultivate and sustain strong relationships with both internal and external partners to drive successful program outcomes.
You will be responsible for underwriting workers compensation, general liability, and commercial auto for Captive programs. The primary goal of the Captives Insurance Underwriter is to strategically grow the assigned Captive Programs while achieving underwriting excellence.
The Captives Insurance Underwriter does not have direct reports but serves as the client manager, influencing internal and external stakeholders to achieve optimal program results. Limited travel (10% - 25%) may be required for Board meetings and client seminars.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Underwriting and Risk Assessment
- Thoroughly analyze underwriting information to assess risks for each account.
- Utilize creative underwriting tools and techniques to write profitable business while maintaining adherence to underwriting standards.
- Effectively communicate the rationale behind underwriting decisions.
- Commit to finding ways to write business without compromising quality.
Program Management
- Participate in all aspects of program management, including actuarial pricing, claims or TPA oversight, reinsurance accounting, and collateral management.
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of the business.
- Show responsiveness and dedication to customers, following through on service commitments.
- Manage programs to achieve underwriting excellence, pricing adequacy, and target returns on equity (ROE).
Production Underwriting and Sales
- Focus on finding innovative ways to write profitable new business.
- Take ownership for the growth of assigned Captive Programs.
- Leverage relationships to drive new business opportunities and enhance renewal retention.
Relationship and Team Skills
- Exhibit strong working relationships with all internal associates to enhance customer satisfaction.
- Build robust relationships with Captive customers and Captive Managers.
- Monitor results closely and implement specific actions to address any shortfalls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- 5+ years of experience in Auto Liability, Workers' Compensation, and General Liability underwriting, with preference for loss-sensitive underwriting experience.
- Experience in construction underwriting is desirable.
- Familiarity with Captive insurance programs is a plus.
- Strong skills in Excel and Mathematics.
- Knowledge of loss-responsive or captive programs and pricing.
- Solid understanding of coverage details.
- Exceptional relationship-building, influencing, and negotiation skills.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
- Outstanding customer service skills.
- Willingness to travel approximately 10% - 25% as needed.

Location:
This role features a Hybrid Work arrangement, requiring in-office attendance at one of the designated locations three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Compensation
The annualized base pay range for this role, reflective of the external market analysis, is $124,000 - $199,800. Actual compensation may vary based on performance, proficiency, and the competencies demonstrated in the role. Base pay is only one part of The Hartford's total compensation package. Additional rewards may include bonuses, long-term incentives, and immediate recognition programs. The posted salary range accommodates hiring at different position titles based on experience.
