Stoney Mountain Farm is a sustainable sheep farm located in Burlington, NC.
Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team with a focus on long-term land stewardship. The primary responsibility of this role is to assist in the maintenance and care of our pastures and grazing systems. Key responsibilities include:
- Pasture Management: Assisting with the design and implementation of rotational grazing patterns to ensure forage recovery and soil vitality.
- Soil Stewardship: Monitoring soil health and implementing natural practices to improve land quality.
- Compost/Permaculture: Assisting with and expanding on-farm composting systems for pasture improvement.
- Infrastructure Care: Maintaining fencing and water systems essential for rotational grazing.
- Animal Welfare: Assisting with sheep movement and basic care as part of the daily farm flow.
- Market & Shipping support: Occasional assistance with Farmers Market preparation and attendance. Help manage the daily shipping flow for our vibrant online sales outlet when the farm schedule requires an extra hand.
Details & Compensation:
- Schedule: Full-time preferred, but hourly arrangements are possible for the right candidate.
- Pay: Commensurate with experience. We offer a clear path to a living wage based on tenure and reliability, with compensation increases as you demonstrate dedication to the health of our pastures and flock.
Qualifications
- Knowledge: A strong understanding of (or desire to learn) soil health and rotational grazing.
- Experience: Previous farm experience is preferred; however, we are willing to train candidates with a strong work ethic and “refined grit.” Experience with sheep is a plus.
- Physicality: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and handle the physical demands of farm operations.
- Versatility: While the focus is in the field, you have a “can-do” attitude toward the occasional needs of a busy online and physical market presence.
