Job Description:
Salary $27.671/hour ($57,556/year) up to $31.126/hour ($64,742/year)
Job duties and responsibilities:
- Performs and summarizes research, including policy and data analysis, literature searches and legal research.
- Drafts and prepares Senator's legislation and testimony, including writing statements of intent, organizing testimony, and meeting and negotiating with stakeholders.
- Performs public relations functions, preparing and disseminating communications to the media, lobbyists, staff, constituents and the public.
- Prepares speeches and bill presentations for a Senator.
- Responds to constituent inquiries, concerns, and requests for information.
- Monitors and summarizes bills, amendments, committee actions, and floor debate.
- Disseminates information to Senators, legislative staff and external contacts.
- Tracks and files media.
- Prepares summaries, briefs, and reports on legislative matters.
Other duties and responsibilities may include:
- Serves as office manager or lead worker in a Senator's office.
- Creates communications for social media accounts and newsletters.
- Attends meetings or events on Senator's behalf.
- Delivers speeches and bill presentations on Senator's behalf.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree. Relevant work experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- Knowledge of the structure and operation of state government, the Legislature, and the legislative process.
- Knowledge of the issues and interests of the Senator and senator's district.
- Knowledge of office computer applications.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with Senators, legislative staff, stakeholders, and the public.
- Ability to work independently, organize and manage work, and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to produce quality work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule including working nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications: Legislative or state government experience.
Physical requirements:
- Prolonged periods of remaining in a stationary position and working on a computer.
