This job contributes to Starbucks success by building and providing leadership for strategy, plans, execution and evaluation of complex, multi-year, multifaceted Engineering control and automations programs. Negotiates for human, financial, and other resources, liaises with external and internal vendors and sponsor-clients on program-related matters and provides professional guidance and leadership to teams to realize the strategic business vision or desired result. Coordinates the multiple projects within the program in accordance with established standards and best practices. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

This role requires regular engagement with manufacturing and distribution sites in the U.S. Southeast; therefore, candidates must be located in or near South Carolina or Georgia, or able to frequently travel to these locations as required.

As a program manager, Engineering, you will…

  • Consult with the sponsoring business unit or units in the development of a clearly articulated vision, mission, business case and resulting programs. Work cross-functionally with business partners and other teams to ensure successful execution of the program. Ensure projects within the program comply with established company standards.
  • Develop an integrated plan that includes program deliverables, strategic alignment, total revenue, profit opportunity, enterprise-wide impacts, milestones, risks, assumptions, constraints, and overall program investment. Update program plans, priorities, and project sequencing as needed.
  • Ensure all project teams working on the program understand and work toward accomplishing the business vision, goals and objectives of the program. Analyze and evaluate project interdependencies and their impacts to the program. Recommend and implement program improvements to meet changing mission parameters and requirements.
  • Monitor project execution to ensure that key milestones and financial parameters are met and that projects are delivered effectively to achieve the overall goals and objectives of the program. Communicate program status to participants and stakeholders accurately and on time. Escalate to ensure issues are resolved, as needed. Ensure program governance.
  • Oversee the financial well-being of the program by analyzing cost effectiveness and exercising cost controls. Develop and monitor the program's budget. Work with business unit to secure funding for program requirements.

  • Strong understanding of Automation controls including but not limited to Rockwell Automation SIEMENS control platforms, or similar (7 years)
  • Strong understanding of SCADA Systems and ISA 88 Standards (7 years)
  • Strong understanding of Batch Systems, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and ISA 95 Standards

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Apply logic in problem-solving and analysis of alternatives to assess the financial and operations impact of automation and controls-based systems (PLC, databases, operator interfaces and AB motion control platforms) related business initiatives. Assess critical information to make effective decisions or recommendations.
  • Develop Request for proposal and bid analyses and lead contract negotiations as required to meet business needs. Manage project budget.

Develop and implement engineering designs in specific technical functions within distribution, manufacturing, or packaging to improve efficiencies, increase capacity and reduce costs. Build consensus across functions as project team leader on complex projects and initiatives.

  • Build multi-function alignment with quality assurance, engineering, manufacturing and other relevant business units or departments by engaging and directing resolutions of complex project and tactical initiatives.
  • Identify best process solutions on controversial issues. Mentor other partners in skill development and quality leadership. Provide training and education when needed.
  • Develop top-level process enhancement and experimental designs for the technical functions of customer operations. Generate technical solutions in a cost-effective manner.
  • Influence team and organizational direction to build cross-functional alignment.
  • Initiate technical strategies to meet changing business needs. Balance trade-offs and conflicting priorities to gain cross-functional concurrence.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and modify systems which include PLC’s, databases, operator interfaces and batch control systems.

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
