Designated Field Biologist/Field Lead
Location: Nevada
Compensation: $40-60/hour
Spheros Environmental is looking for a Designated Biologist/Field Lead to serve as rotating primary field contact for a development project near the Las Vegas area and in larger Nevada managing field staff, natural resources, and working with the construction team and client to resolve and anticipate any potential non-compliance issues in the field during the development of the project
Key Responsibilities
Personnel Management
- Staff Management
- Communicate staff responsibilities for the day (i.e., monitoring needs, site checks, pre-con surveys, nesting bird surveys, den observations).
- Manage shifting responsibilities throughout day and week.
- Serve as primary contact in the field to resolve immediate issues and questions (safety, non-compliance).
- Ensure the safety of staff (i.e., rotate staff for rest breaks, cool down breaks as necessary with weather and task in mind.
- Train and provide guidance to new staff.
- Manage poor performance and provide feedback for staff personal growth to Group Managers as necessary.
- Client/EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) On-Site Management
- Inform client/EPC of any potential issues and trouble shoot as they arise.
- WEAP training all project members.
- Serve as primary contact for client/EPC for site and/or work updates.
- Communicate site changes to staff.
- Manage timely resolution of non-compliance issues.
- Act as Spheros’ onsite bio representative for regulatory agencies.
Decision Making
- Alert Project Manager (PM), Project Coordinator (PC) of any potential risks relating to projects and/or employees.
- Assess issues and escalate to PC or PM for higher level decisions (i.e. buffer incursions, natal dens, non-compliance)
- Provide input to Group Managers and PCs on performance evaluation, work hours and schedule, and workplace policies, etc.
- Assign scheduled staff to appropriate tasks with skill level and communicate in advance
- Anticipate and assign execution of necessary pre-construction surveys and level of compliance support necessary
Communication
- Internal
- Check and respond to internal DM messages regularly, communicating updates to staff and responding to questions promptly.
- Lead daily worksite meetings.
- Conduct scheduled safety checks.
- Inform PC or PM of any potential staff or project issues.
- Participate in internal weekly project management calls
- Anticipate project needs in advance for scheduling purposes and alert PC of any potential changes
- External
- Respond to any messages and calls from the client or construction team promptly
- Participate in meetings with client and construction on day-to-day needs and any regulatory agency visits as needed
- Halt activities when a non-compliance occurs and negotiate alternative activities or routes with construction
Deliverables
- Understand data collection protocols well and ensure that data is being collected correctly amongst the field team
- Complete all applicable weekly compliance monitoring reports, resource activity tracking sheets (nests, natal dens, buffers, etc…), and ongoing worksite issues reports
Leadership
- Lead by example. Provide guidance and monitor team's adherence to company's policies and procedures. Ensure best practices for safety with group.
- Foster and embrace a people-focused, high-performance culture that is aligned with the company's purpose and vision.
- Monitor individual performance, providing support to those who are not meeting expectations.
- Ability to uphold the highest level of confidentiality and understanding how/when to apply discretion and when to inform Group Managers, PCs, or PMs
- Capable of having challenging conversations applying high emotional intelligence where appropriate (written and verbal).
- Demonstrated leadership skills with communication, and managing expectations for field staff

Qualifications
- Minimally bachelor’s degree in the field of biology, botany, ecology, environmental science or related field
- 5 years + related field experience with wildlife, plants, ecology
- Experience with compliance monitoring
- Experience with Mojave and Sonoran Desert ecosystems preferred
- At least 2 years of supervisory /field lead experience
- Familiarity with digital field data collection (ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, etc….)
- Adept at Microsoft 365 programs (i.e.Word, Excel, Sharepoint, Outlook), willingness to adapt and apply new technologies as they emerge.
