Job Description

We are looking for an extremely overqualified, part-time assistant office manager and all-purpose admin aide.

Yep, that is a strange intro, but over the years, our law firm has had great success and also a great deal of fun connecting to fill roles like this with people who have good academic track records (sometimes even a post-college degree) and who are pursuing other, creative, interests (music, theater, writing, etc.). The idea had its genesis at the firm where I worked as a very young lawyer before starting this firm. (We once employed as many as ~60 opera singers on floating schedules to fill staff needs that were flexible but often demanding (we found that the work could be done by intelligent people who had great skills that they we happy to deploy to earn some bucks while still pursuing their greater goals (which some of them ultimately achieved with great success)).)

We envision someone being in the office three to four days per week on a schedule that is flexible (this is a fully on-site position), but with both sides respecting the weekly scheduling needs of the other that could vary from week-to-week.

For an incomplete summary of our firm’s needs ―

  • proficiency with basic office software (we are Microsoft, not Apple, users)
  • proficiency at picking up other software ― essentially, the basics that are the backbone of law firm accounting and practice/business management
  • a knack for seeing problems and solving problems when you see them
  • willingness to get hands dirty and take on the menial tasks that are part of law firm day-to-day admin
  • the knack for letting minor annoyances, slights, etc., roll off your back (in our experience, that knack is often found in someone having a different field of interest and good smarts; but not always ― and to us, having that knack really matters)
  • good commonsense skills in dealing with guests, clients, other lawyers, etc., in ways that grease the wheels
  • a plus could be good working familiarity with emerging AI technology (beyond asking ChatGPT to plan a trip or draft something; the more advanced stuff that leads to real efficiencies on a broader scale is becoming increasingly important to all businesses and can add a lot of value (it is worth mentioning, though it is not essential to this position))
  • an excellent sense of humor
  • the ability to work under pressure and meet or beat deadlines, with cranky senior lawyers breathing down your neck, while retaining your excellent sense of humor
  • and –
  • an excellent sense of humor

To learn more about us, please visit our web site at www.szslaw.com. Our firm’s lawyers are large law firm alumnae/i. We roll up our sleeves, work hard and get great satisfaction from our work. We focus on commercial cases and counseling in complicated (principally business/financial) disputes. We represent parties in high stakes matters and rely on all members of our team to care about the work above all.

This job is by no means for everyone, but can be ideal for the person who fits the profile described.
