Position: Senior Platform Engineer (AWS)
- Location: Rockville, MD / Tysons Corner, VA Work Model: Hybrid – 3 Days Onsite per Week Duration: 6-months w/ probable extension Rate: $60 on W2 Work Authorization: USC/GC
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer with strong AWS platform-building experience to support the modernization of an existing big data platform. This role focuses on designing, building, and evolving cloud-native platforms using AWS services, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and automation.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building scalable platforms (not just pipelines) and will play a key role in transitioning legacy systems to modern cloud architectures. This is a senior-level role requiring deep platform engineering expertise and the ability to drive architectural decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and modernize cloud-based platforms using AWS services
- Develop scalable and reusable platform components
- Implement Infrastructure as Code using CloudFormation (Terraform is a plus)
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes
- Develop automation and orchestration solutions using Python
- Monitor platform performance, reliability, and operational efficiency
- Support modernization efforts by evaluating and adopting new technologies (e.g., Athena, Trino)
- Collaborate with teams to evolve platform architecture and best practices
Required Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS platform engineering
- Deep understanding of AWS services including S3, EMR, RDS, and CloudWatch
- Experience designing scalable, reusable platforms
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation required)
- Experience building and maintaining IaC templates (not just consuming them)
- Strong DevOps experience including CI/CD pipeline design and implementation
- Experience with Git-based workflows and automated deployments
- Strong Python development experience for automation and orchestration
- Strong operational mindset (monitoring, reliability, automation)
- Proven experience in platform ownership and architecture
Required Software Skills
- AWS (S3, EMR, RDS, CloudWatch)
- CloudFormation
- Python
- CI/CD Tools (Git-based workflows)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Terraform
- Experience with Athena, Trino, or similar query engines
- Exposure to big data platforms and analytics architectures
- Understanding of platform design tradeoffs and modernization strategies
