Your Role

The Advisor, People & Culture (Employee Labour Relations) provides frontline advisory support on a range of workplace and labour relations matters across the organization. This role serves as a key contact for employees and leaders offering guidance, coaching and practical solutions to support timely and consistent resolution of workplace issues.

Working in partnership with management and People & Culture colleagues, the Advisor supports the interpretation and application of policies, collective agreement (where applicable), and employment legislation to ensure compliance, consistency, and best practice.

A key focus of this role is promoting positive employee and labour relations through early intervention, effective communication, and conflict resolution. The Advisor contributes to a respectful, inclusive, and psychologically safe workplace culture by supporting constructive dialogue and addressing workplace concerns.

Your Impact

  • You will assist in the administration of practices, policies and procedures. You will provide advice, direction and guidance to all levels in the organization on the interpretation and application of these policies and procedures to ensure consistency of standards and compliance.
  • You will work closely with colleagues across the business to monitor, review and update all policies in line with current legislation and best practice.
  • You will proactively keep abreast with developments in employment legislation and human resources best practices, sharing with the team to ensure continuous improvement in the service offered. Identify and communicate these implications to business areas as appropriate.
  • You will manage staff relationships, by building rapport with and performing check-ins for new hires, in addition to soliciting feedback from former employees.
  • You will identify employee relations issues and take appropriate actions to address and resolve those issues.
  • You will conduct employee relations activities such as investigations, conflict management, and coaching services.
  • You will consult on issues related to workplace relations and performance management.
  • You will serve as first point of contact for People and Culture queries in the organization.
  • You will provide an advisory service to employees ensuring that they are fully aware of their rights, entitlements and services provided by the department.
  • You will provide information on all people and culture programs and services.
  • You will provide a broad range of support services which will include but not be limited to recruitment, benefits, employee relations, and employee recognition.
  • You will assist in the design and delivery of development workshops to enhance knowledge and skills within the corporation.
  • You will contribute and support the continuous improvement of department systems, practices and policies in the organisation, ensuring they underpin our Company culture.
  • You will maintain effective communication and implementation of corporate programs to all employees in the company.
  • You will oversee and maintain the human resource database by ensuring that human resource files and records are accurate, updated and maintained in accordance with legal requirements and company policies and procedures.
  • You will participate in workforce management to support client staffing needs, including full cycle recruitment support such as: developing recruitment campaigns, social media posting, processing employment verification forms, reference checks, background checks and employee onboarding, as required.
  • You will assist in coordinating special events such as Staff Events, etc
  • You will perform miscellaneous administrative functions and special projects as assigned by your General Manager.

Your Accomplishments

  • Completion of two-year post-secondary diploma in Human Resources or Business Administration is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or other relevant field is considered an asset.
  • A Minimum of 3 years of experience in a generalist Human Resources Advisor role is required.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is preferred.
  • CPHR designation preferred.
  • You have a sound knowledge, understanding and practical application of Employment Law.
  • Career fair and or trade show experience is an asset.
  • You are highly organised and able to prioritise work in a busy environment
  • You have a proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external managers and contacts
  • Verbal communication skills to communicate with all levels of the organisation. Confident at delivering feedback.
  • Written communication skills to produce succinct correspondence and reports.
  • You have experience in working effectively with teams.
  • You have experience with MS Office applications and familiarity with an HRMS
  • You have strong communication, interpersonal and time management skills
  • You are able to deal tactfully and effectively with all levels of contacts inside and outside the organization
  • You have strong attention to detail
  • You would be willing to travel to support our business operations. Valid Driver's license is required
  • You have a demonstrated proficiency in handling matters of highly confidential nature
  • You show a high degree of initiative and ability to assume a high degree of responsibility
  • You always exercise sound and independent judgment.

Working Conditions

  • This position is fulltime requiring 40 hours/week. There may be requirement to work evenings, weekends and holidays based on business needs.
  • Moderate physical activity is required; for example, the ability to lift items in excess of 40 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently;
  • This position requires sitting or standing at a desk for an extended period of time, working for extended periods on a computer, talking on the telephone, standing, walking, kneeling, stooping/bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, pinching, gripping and repetitive motion.
  • This position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, depth perception and color vision
  • Constant, positive interaction with employees, supervisors, patrons and the public is required; and,
  • This position involves periods of high mental and/or emotional stress.

This position may require travel between our various facilities within the Wood Buffalo Region.
